Overview
SIST EN 60819-3-3:2012 is a European standard developed by CLC (CENELEC) that specifies requirements for unfilled aramid (aromatic polyamide) papers used in electrical insulation applications. This part of the IEC 60819 series focuses on non-cellulosic papers tailored for electrical purposes and outlines specifications for four types of unfilled aramid papers:
- Type 1: Calendered paper
- Type 2: Calendered paper with improved tearing resistance and conformability
- Type 3: Uncalendered paper
- Type 4: Calendered paper with lower density for laminating
This third edition updates and replaces the 2006 version, introducing new test method references and additional thinner grades of Type 4 paper designed for lamination.
Key Topics
The standard establishes stringent technical specifications applicable to the manufacturing and quality control of unfilled aramid papers. Key aspects include:
- Material Types: Four distinct types defined by calendering and mechanical properties, each suited for different electrical insulation roles.
- Thickness & Density: Nominal thickness values with permissible deviations are specified; Type 4 papers include newly added thin variants optimized for laminating applications.
- Mechanical Properties: Requirements for tensile strength, elongation at break, and edge tearing resistance ensure reliable mechanical performance under operational stresses.
- Electrical Characteristics: Minimum electric strength requirements guarantee the paper’s effectiveness as an insulating material.
- Shrinkage on Heating: Limits on dimensional changes at elevated temperatures ensure material stability and performance in thermal environments commonly encountered in electrical equipment.
- Testing Methods: All tests are aligned with IEC 60819-2, ensuring consistent evaluation of non-cellulosic paper materials. Sampling procedures follow ISO 186 standards for paper quality determination.
Importantly, users are advised to select specific paper types based on application-specific performance criteria rather than on standard specifications alone.
Applications
EN 60819-3-3 standardized unfilled aramid papers are critical in electrical engineering and manufacturing sectors, particularly for:
- Electrical Insulation: Serving as dielectric barriers in transformers, motors, generators, and other high-voltage electrical equipment.
- Laminated Insulating Components: Especially Type 4 calendered papers designed for laminating to produce composite insulation materials.
- High-Performance Electrical Materials: Their excellent mechanical strength, thermal stability, and electrical insulating properties make aramid papers suitable for demanding industrial applications.
- Tear-Resistant Embeddings: Type 2 papers offer enhanced tearing resistance and conformability enabling durability in complex insulation designs.
These applications leverage the distinctive properties of aromatic polyamide papers to provide safety, reliability, and longevity in electrical systems.
Related Standards
For comprehensive understanding and implementation of unfilled aramid paper insulation, the following related standards should be considered:
- EN 60819-1: Non-cellulosic papers for electrical purposes - Part 1: Definitions and general requirements
- EN 60819-2: Non-cellulosic papers for electrical purposes - Part 2: Methods of test (test procedures referenced in EN 60819-3-3)
- ISO 186: Paper and board - Sampling to determine average quality (sampling methods for quality control)
- IEC 60554-2: Former standard for cellulosic papers (now superseded in this context by IEC 60819-2 methods)
These standards collectively provide guidance on definitions, testing, and quality assurance essential for solid electrical insulating materials.

FOREWORD 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user. 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter. 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any services carried out by independent certification bodies. 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication. 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury
