Overview

EN 13071-3:2019 is the CEN European Standard that specifies recommended lifting connections for stationary waste containers up to 5 000 l that are top lifted and bottom emptied. Part 3 of the EN 13071 series focuses on the design, dimensions and functional requirements of container lifting connections (loops, mushrooms, twin lifting bars) used during loading, unloading and hatch locking/unlocking operations. It supersedes EN 13071-3:2011 and was approved in September 2019.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Requirements for container lifting and opening/closing/locking connections used during handling of top-lifted, bottom-emptied stationary waste containers.
  • Terminology: Defines key terms such as container lifting connection, container handling system, loop, locking loop and mushroom.
  • Loop types and dimensions:
    • Single loop: Must permit use with hooks covered by EN 1677 series and be designed to avoid accidental opening during lift.
    • Two loops in line: Interaxial distance = 240 mm ± 10 mm.
    • Two loops parallel: Interaxial distance = 100 mm ± 40 mm.
    • Three loops in line: Interaxial distance = 280 mm ± 50 mm.
    • Annex A: Upper loop shape - internal radius R = 45 mm ± 5 mm for a minimum 90° on the vertical upper axle.
  • Mushroom lifting connections:
    • Dimensions and examples provided (Annex B). Designed to work with a specifically designated container handling system.
    • Compatibility requirement: Maximum angle between mushroom axis and lifting connection axis during movement is ±3° to ensure controlled angular position and protect the container top.
  • Locking movement: If a locking loop/mushroom is used to operate bottom hatches, the vertical travel shall not exceed 500 mm; the upper position locks, the lower position opens.
  • Twin lifting bars: Interaxial distance between axles 437 mm ± 5 mm; axle diameter 32 mm ± 1 mm.

Applications and users

EN 13071-3:2019 is intended for:

  • Manufacturers and designers of stationary waste containers and lifting accessories.
  • Waste management equipment suppliers and container handling system designers.
  • Municipalities and procurement teams specifying container compatibility and safety.
  • Safety engineers, conformity assessors and testing laboratories verifying lifting connections meet CEN requirements. Practical applications include design verification of lifting interfaces, ensuring compatibility with refuse-collection lifting devices, and reducing risks during handling and emptying operations.
