Overview

EN 1677-2:2000+A1:2008 is a CEN European Standard for forged steel lifting hooks with latch, Grade 8, intended as components for slings. It specifies safety, design, material, manufacturing, testing, marking and documentation requirements for hooks with eye or clevis and pin up to 63 t WLL (working load limit). The standard is harmonized to support essential requirements of the European Machinery Directive (see Annexes ZA/ZB) and excludes hand‑forged hooks.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and use: Hooks mainly for use in chain slings (EN 818‑4), steel wire rope slings (prEN 13414‑1) and textile slings (EN 1492‑1/2).
  • Design & dimensions: Minimum dimensional requirements linked to WLL (see Table 3). Annex A provides formulae for calculating principal dimensions (e.g. D = 21.2 × WLL).
  • Materials & mechanical properties: Materials, heat treatment and mechanical properties are defined in alignment with EN 1677‑1 (general Grade 8 component requirements).
  • Hook latches: Must be spring‑loaded (gravity‑only latches prohibited), engage at the hook point and remain positively closed in any orientation. Latch spring corrosion protection and durability (≥10,000 complete openings) are required.
  • Latch strength & torque: Latch must resist forces f1 and f2 (equal to 300 kg or 10% of WLL, whichever is greater; f2 ≤ 20 kN). Table 4 gives guidance on minimum/maximum torque values for opening latches.
  • Verification & testing: Type tests, manufacturing test regime and acceptance criteria are specified (personnel must be competent). Latches require specific type testing on samples.
  • Marking, certificate & instructions: Manufacturer marking, certificate and user instructions (assembly, disassembly and fit guidance) are mandatory.

Practical applications

  • Ensures safe selection and use of forged steel lifting hooks in lifting and rigging operations across manufacturing, construction, maritime and logistics.
  • Used by sling manufacturers when specifying Grade 8 hooks for chain slings, wire rope slings and textile slings.
  • Critical for procurement teams, safety engineers and inspection authorities to verify conformity, traceability and safe WLL selection.

Who should use this standard

  • Hook and sling manufacturers and assemblers
  • Lifting equipment designers and OEMs
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors
  • Safety managers, inspectors and procurement specialists

Related standards

  • EN 1677‑1 (Forged steel components – Grade 8)
  • EN 818‑4, EN 818‑6 (Chain slings)
  • EN 1492‑1 / EN 1492‑2 (Textile slings)
  • prEN 13414‑1 (Wire rope slings)
  • EN 292 / EN 1050 (machine safety / risk assessment)

Practical takeaway: EN 1677‑2 defines the measurable, testable requirements for Grade 8 forged hooks with latch to ensure safe lifting performance, traceability and compliance with EU safety directives. Keywords: EN 1677‑2, forged steel lifting hooks, Grade 8, hook latch, working load limit, chain slings, wire rope slings, textile slings, safety standard.
