Reinforcement - Specifications for woven fabrics - Part 1: Designation
1.1 This Part 1 of EN 13417 establishes a method of designation for woven fabrics which may be used as a basis for specifications of fabrics used for the reinforcement of plastics.
1.2 This designation system applies to fabrics made from para-aramid, carbon, glass, polyethylene, polyester and ceramic fibre in the form of single yarns, plied yarns, cabled yarns, textured yarns, rovings, tows, etc. and which are intended to provide reinforcement in plastic composite materials.
The material used may be used on its own or in combination (hybrids).
1.3 The designation of a fabric is structured in a product hierarchy which includes several levels which determine families and sub-families of fabrics.
It is not intended that this hierarchy takes into account all the attributes of individual fabrics which may use different yarn types or different yarn counts. Neither is it intended to imply that woven fabrics having the same designation give necessarily the same performance.
This Part 1 of EN 13417 does not give engineering data, performance data or data which may be required to specify woven fabrics for a particular application or method of processing.
If such additional properties are required they shall be determined in accordance with the test methods specified in EN 13417-2.

Overview
SIST EN 13417-1:2003 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines a designation system for woven fabrics used as reinforcement in plastics. This standard establishes a clear, structured method for identifying woven fabric types intended for reinforcing plastic composite materials. It applies to a variety of fibres including para-aramid, carbon, glass, polyethylene, polyester and ceramic fibres, whether used singly or combined as hybrid fabrics.
The purpose of SIST EN 13417-1:2003 is to provide a consistent terminology and coding hierarchy for woven reinforcement fabrics, facilitating communication and specification requirements across industries involved in composite materials manufacturing. While it focuses on fabric designation, it does not provide performance or engineering data, which are covered in subsequent parts of EN 13417.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard applies to woven fabrics made from various high-performance fibres (e.g., carbon, glass, aramid) in different yarn configurations such as single, plied, cabled, or textured yarns. These fabrics are designed specifically for reinforcement in plastic composites.Designation Structure
The fabric designation is structured in a multi-level product hierarchy:- Identity Block: European Standard number (EN 13417)
- Individual Item Block: Subdivided into four data blocks:
- Data Block 1: Material type and grade (e.g., carbon high modulus)
- Data Block 2: Construction fabric properties including yarn type, yarn count, and weave type
- Data Block 3: Fabric weight in grams per square meter (g/m²)
- Data Block 4: Warp/weft ratio for unidirectional, mixed, and hybrid fabrics
Material Coding System
Materials are coded by letters representing fibre type and grade. In hybrid fabrics with multiple fibres, the code lists materials in descending order of weight. For example, [C/HT] denotes carbon fibre with high tenacity.Fabric Construction Properties
Fabric properties such as yarn designation (including linear density), yarn count (ends per cm for warp and picks per cm for weft), and weave type (e.g., plain, twill, satin) are standardized for clear designation.Non-Performance Standard
SIST EN 13417-1:2003 only provides the designation framework and excludes mechanical or processing performance data, which are addressed in EN 13417-2 and EN 13417-3.
Applications
Composite Material Manufacturing
EN 13417-1 is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and designers working with plastic composite materials reinforced by woven fabrics. It ensures uniform identification and prevents ambiguity when specifying reinforcement fabrics.Quality Control and Procurement
The designation system helps streamline fabric ordering, quality assurance, and inventory management by providing a clear coding method for fabric types and properties.Research and Development
Researchers developing new composite materials benefit from a standardized language for reporting and comparing woven fabric reinforcements.International Trade and Compliance
Harmonized standards like EN 13417-1 promote consistency in international markets, ensuring fabrics meet recognized European specifications.
