Overview

The SIST EN ISO 7010:2020/A2:2022 standard provides an important amendment to the established framework of graphical symbols for safety colours and registered safety signs. Developed and maintained by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this amendment aligns with ISO 7010:2019/Amd 2:2020 and was formalized in April 2022. It ensures the continuous enhancement of standardized safety signs used internationally to communicate hazard warnings, mandatory actions, and safety information effectively.

This amendment introduces new safety signs designed to improve hazard recognition and safety communication across workplaces and public environments. It supports consistent visual language for safety, promoting clearer understanding and compliance, which ultimately helps in the prevention of accidents and enhances occupational safety.

Key Topics

  • Standardization of Safety Signs
SIST EN ISO 7010:2020/A2:2022 standardizes graphical safety symbols ensuring uniformity across industries and countries for hazard communication and safety instructions.

  • New Safety Signs Added
This amendment introduces the following key safety signs:

    • E064: First Aid Responder - identifies persons trained in first aid.
    • F017: Firefighters’ Lift - marks locations of lifts designated for firefighter use and their control switches.
    • M055: Keep Out of Reach of Children - alerts that specific items must be kept away from children to avoid injury.
    • W071: Warning; Substance or Mixture Presenting a Health Hazard - warns about substances with health risks based on GHS classifications.
    • W072: Warning; Substance or Mixture Causing an Environmental Hazard - signifies environmental hazards due to hazardous substances or mixtures.
  • Safety Sign Features

    • Clear, universally recognizable symbols aligned with ISO 3864 colorimetry standards.
    • Supplementary text may be used to increase comprehension in contexts without accompanying training or manuals.
    • Designed to minimize confusion and ensure rapid hazard identification.
  • International and European Compliance
This amendment must be adopted by all CEN member countries, including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and many others, ensuring harmonization of safety communication in the European Economic Area and beyond.

Applications

  • Occupational Safety and Health
Organizations use these updated signs in workplaces to highlight new hazards or safety roles, such as identifying first aid responders and firefighter access points, thereby improving emergency responsiveness and safety compliance.

  • Chemical and Environmental Safety
The addition of health and environmental hazard warnings supports industries handling hazardous chemicals, ensuring clear communication according to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). This minimizes risks to personnel and the environment.

  • Public Safety and Accessibility
The "Keep Out of Reach of Children" sign supports safety in public and private environments by preventing accidental injuries in homes, schools, and child-focused facilities.

  • Emergency and Fire Safety Equipment
Firefighting lifts are critical in emergency situations-proper signage enables firefighters' access and operational readiness, enhancing building safety protocols.

Related Standards

  • ISO 3864 - Specifies safety colours and safety sign design principles, providing the colorimetric and photometric properties that complement ISO 7010 graphical symbols.
  • Globally Harmonized System (GHS) - Worldwide system for classifying and labelling chemical hazards, referenced for health and environmental hazard sign criteria in this amendment.
  • EN ISO 7010:2020 - The underlying standard for graphical symbols used on safety signs, establishing the comprehensive set of approved symbols for Europe and internationally.
  • ISO/IEC Directives Parts 1 & 2 - Govern the development, editorial rules, and maintenance processes of international standards like ISO 7010.

SIST EN ISO 7010:2020/A2:2022 is essential for professionals involved in occupational health and safety, environmental protection, emergency management, and public safety communication. Adopting these standardized safety signs ensures consistent, clear hazard messaging, enhancing understanding and preventing accidents worldwide. Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).
