(Main)Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 6: Low temperature tensile test
Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 6: Low temperature tensile test
This document specifies the dimensions, the method of sampling and the preparation of the test specimens, also the conditions for performing the low temperature tensile test perpendicular to the weld in order to determine the low temperature tensile welding factor.
A low temperature tensile test can be used in conjunction with other tests (e.g. bend, tensile creep, macro) to assess the performance of welded assemblies, made from thermoplastics materials.
The low temperature tensile welding factor and the appearance of the fracture surface provide a guide regarding the ductility of the joint and the quality of the work.
This document is applicable to co-axial or co-planar welded assemblies made from thermoplastics materials filled or unfilled, but not reinforced, irrespective of the welding process used.
This document does not apply to co-axial welded assemblies of an external diameter less than 20 mm.

Overview
kSIST FprEN 12814-6:2026 is a European draft standard that specifies procedures for the low temperature tensile test of welded joints in thermoplastics semi-finished products. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) and the CEN/TC 249 Technical Committee, this standard outlines the dimensions, sampling methods, specimen preparation, and testing conditions necessary to determine the low temperature tensile welding factor. This procedure is crucial for evaluating the mechanical performance and quality assurance of welded assemblies constructed from thermoplastic materials, ensuring they meet international reliability and safety requirements.
Key Topics
Test Methodology
- Specifies dimensions and preparation of test specimens for weld assessment.
- Describes the low temperature tensile test conducted perpendicular to the weld to promote brittle fracture.
- Outlines sampling procedures to ensure consistent, representative testing.
Performance Assessment
- Introduces the low temperature tensile welding factor, a comparative metric for the strength of welded versus unwelded specimens.
- Evaluates fracture surface appearance to gather insights into joint ductility and overall weld quality.
Scope and Applicability
- Applicable to both co-axial and co-planar welded assemblies of thermoplastics that are filled or unfilled, but not reinforced.
- Covers welded assemblies produced by any welding process, provided external diameter (for co-axial assemblies) is not less than 20 mm.
Reporting Requirements
- Mandates comprehensive reporting of all test and specimen variables, including weld type, test temperatures, speeds, specimen dimensions, and visual observations.
Applications
The low temperature tensile test serves a vital role in the overall qualification and performance evaluation of welded thermoplastic assemblies:
Quality Control in Manufacturing
- Ensures weld integrity in piping, tanks, and other fabrications critical to chemical processing, water treatment, or infrastructure.
- Provides a reliable metric for acceptance or rejection of welded joints based on mechanical strength and fracture characteristics.
Material and Process Development
- Assists in benchmarking various welding techniques and thermoplastic materials under sub-zero service conditions.
- Offers comparative data to optimize welding parameters, such as temperature and speed, for improved ductility and fracture resistance.
Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- Enables engineers and manufacturers to comply with European and international quality standards for thermoplastic welds.
- Supports documentation required for audits, certifications, and customer specifications.
Research and Laboratory Testing
- Useful in R&D settings for comparative studies on the effects of fillers, additives, or design changes on weld behavior at low temperatures.
