Paper and board - Paper and board intended to come into contact with foodstuffs - Determination of cadmium, chromium and lead in an aqueous extract

This European Standard is one in a series of Standards for the determination of heavy metals in an aqueous extract of paper or board intended for contact with food. This European Standard specifies the test method for the determination of cadmium, lead and chromium in an aqueous extract.
It is applicable to paper and paperboard with extractable metal contents exceeding:
-   0,02 mg per kg for cadmium;
-   0,15 mg per kg for lead;
-   0,05 mg per kg for chromium.
Metal content levels below those given can be measured by this European Standard if very sensitive equipment is available and if all other laboratory conditions fulfil the requirements for trace element analysis.

Diese Europäische Norm ist Bestandteil einer Reihe von Normen, die die Bestimmung von Schwermetallen in wässrigen Extrakten aus Papier, Karton und Pappe, die in Kontakt mit Lebensmitteln kommen, festlegen. Diese Europäische Norm legt ein Prüfverfahren zur quantitativen Bestimmung von Cadmium, Blei und Chrom in einem wässrigen Extrakt fest.
Sie ist anwendbar auf Papier, Karton und Pappe mit extrahierbaren Metallgehalten, die folgende Werte überschreiten:
-   0,02 mg je kg bei Cadmium;
-   0,15 mg je kg bei Blei;
-   0,05 mg je kg bei Chrom.
Metallgehalte, die unterhalb der oben genannten liegen, können mit dieser Europäischen Norm gemessen werden, wenn eine sehr empfindliche Laborausstattung vorhanden ist. Ferner müssen für die Spurenelementanalyse alle Anforderungen an die Laborbedingungen erfüllt sein.

Le présent document fait partie d’une série de normes pour la détermination des métaux lourds dans un extrait aqueux de papier ou de carton destiné à entrer en contact avec les denrées alimentaires. Le présent document spécifie la méthode d’essai pour le dosage du cadmium, du plomb et du chrome dans un extrait aqueux.
Il est applicable aux papiers et cartons avec des teneurs en métaux lourds extractibles dépassant :
-   0,1 mg/kg pour le cadmium ;
-   0,6 mg/kg pour le plomb ;
-   0,25 mg/kg pour le chrome.
Des teneurs en métaux inférieures aux valeurs indiquées ci-dessus peuvent être mesurées en suivant le présent document si un appareillage très sensible est disponible et si toutes les autres conditions dans le laboratoire satisfont aux exigences de l’analyse des éléments à l’état de traces.

Ta evropski standard spada v skupino standardov za določanje težkih kovin v vodnem ekstraktu papirja ali kartona, namenjenega za neposreden stik z živili. Ta evropski standard določa preskusno metodo za določanje kadmija, svinca in kroma v vodnem ekstraktu.
Uporablja se za papir, karton in lepenko z vsebnostjo izločljivih kovin, ki presega:
– 0,02 mg/kg za kadmij;
– 0,15 mg/kg za svinec;
– 0,05 mg/kg za krom.
Ravni vsebnosti kovin pod navedenimi se lahko izmerijo s tem evropskim standardom, če je na voljo zelo občutljiva oprema in če vsi drugi laboratorijski pogoji izpolnjujejo zahteve za analizo elementov v sledovih.

This document (EN 12498:2018) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 172 “Pulp, paper
and board”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by May 2019, and conflicting national standards shall be
withdrawn at the latest by May 2019.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CEN shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
This document supersedes EN 12498:2005.
With regards to EN 12498:2005 the following changes have been made:
