Materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs - Cutlery and table holloware - Part 4: Requirements for gold-plated cutlery (ISO 8442-4:1997)
This European Standard specifies the following requirements for gold plated cutlery: a) performance requirements for table cutlery (e.g. knives, forks, spoons, carving sets, ladles, and other serving pieces); b) composition limits for base metals for cutlery; c) tests for resistance to permanent deformation, firmness of handle attachment, hardness of blades, resistance to corrosion and the thickness and adhesion of gold coatings; d) three minimum thicknesses of gold plating: a first class, a second class and a third class
Werkstoffe und Gegenstände in Kontakt mit Lebensmitteln - Schneidwaren und Tafelgeräte - Teil 4: Anforderungen für vergoldete Bestecke (ISO 8442-4:1997)
Diese Europäische Norm legt folgende Anforderungen für vergoldete Bestecke fest: a) Gebrauchsanforderungen an Bestecke (z.B. Messer, Gabeln, Löffel, Tranchierbestecke, Schöpflöffel und andere Vorlegeteile); b) Grenzwerte bezüglich der Grundwerkstoffe für Bestecke; c) Versuche zur Prüfung der Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen Dauerverformung, zur Prüfung der Haltbarkeit der Griffverbindung, der Härte der Messerklingen, Korrosionsbeständigkeit sowie der Schichtdicke und Haftung des Goldüberzugs; d) drei Mindest-Schichtdicken des Goldüberzugs: Erste Qualität, Zweite Qualität und Dritte Qualität.
a) exigences relatives aux performances des couverts de table (tels que couteaux, fourchettes, cuillers, ustensiles à découper, louches et autres articles utilisés pour le service) ;
b) limites relatives à la composition des métaux de base constituant les couverts ;
c) essais de résistance à la déformation permanente, solidité du point de fixation du manche, dureté des lames, résistance à la corrosion, ainsi qu'épaisseur et adhérence des revêtements d'or ;

Overview
EN ISO 8442-4:1997 - "Materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs - Cutlery and table holloware - Part 4: Requirements for gold-plated cutlery" is a CEN-adopted European standard (identical to ISO 8442-4:1997) that defines safety, performance and coating requirements for gold-plated cutlery used in contact with food. It addresses the materials, mechanical performance and plating quality needed to ensure durable, hygienic and food-safe tableware.
Key Topics
- Scope of products: Applies to table cutlery such as knives, forks, spoons, carving sets, ladles and other serving pieces intended for food contact.
- Performance requirements: Functional criteria for table cutlery including mechanical strength and durability under normal use.
- Base metal composition: Limits and acceptable ranges for underlying metals used in cutlery manufacture to ensure food safety and compatibility with gold plating.
- Plating classes: Defines three minimum thickness classes for gold coating (First, Second, Third class) to categorize plating durability and intended use - useful for specifying product quality.
- Testing methods: Specifies tests for:
- Resistance to permanent deformation
- Firmness of handle attachment
- Hardness of blades
- Resistance to corrosion
- Thickness and adhesion of gold coatings
- Food contact focus: Aligns with the broader category of materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs, ensuring plated surfaces do not compromise food safety.
Applications
Who uses EN ISO 8442-4:1997 and why:
- Manufacturers and product designers - to specify plating thickness, select base metals and design cutlery that meets performance and food-safety requirements.
- Quality control and test laboratories - to perform standardized tests for adhesion, corrosion resistance and mechanical durability.
- Purchasing and procurement teams - to create specifications and acceptance criteria for suppliers of gold-plated cutlery for retail, catering or hospitality sectors.
- Regulatory and compliance officers - to demonstrate conformity with established European/ISO guidance for food-contact articles.
- Hospitality and catering users - to understand durability classes and select cutlery suitable for frequency of use, cleaning regimes and appearance retention.
