Overview
EN 60335-2-76:2005/FprAF:2013 is a draft amendment (prAF) to the European safety standard EN 60335-2-76 covering household and similar electrical appliances - particular requirements for electric fence energizers. Prepared by CLC/TC 61, the draft (2012) introduced additional requirements for cascading intelligent electric fence energizers (devices with dedicated measurement terminals). Note: the CLC project was stopped after a negative vote (2014-11-19), so this document remained a draft amendment and was not adopted as a final European Standard.
Key topics and technical requirements
The draft amendment adds a new normative Annex ZBB addressing cascading intelligent energizers. Major technical points include:
Definitions
- Cascading intelligent electric fence energizer: unit with one or more measurement terminals in addition to output terminals.
- Measurement terminal: intended only for monitoring a neighbouring fence; it must not supply impulses.
Marking and instructions
- Instructions must state that measurement terminals may only be connected using the provided high-voltage insulated connecting leads to prevent inadvertent contact with two independent fences.
Leakage current & electric strength
- Test voltages: apply a test voltage of 2 U but not less than 10 000 V between measurement terminal contact and the fence circuit. For mains-operated or mains-capable battery units a similar test is required between measurement terminal and supply circuit.
Construction and tests
- Measurement terminals must not emit pulses; compliance is verified by measuring peak voltage (must not exceed SELV values).
- Each measurement terminal requires a high-voltage insulated connecting lead of at least 2.5 m; insulation must withstand normal-use electrical stress and be tested at 20 000 V for 15 minutes with no breakdown.
- Accessible parts: measurement terminals must be enclosed so no unintended electric path is accessible (tested with probe B of EN 61032).
- Visual differentiation: measurement terminals must be located on the opposite façade to output terminals and be of different geometric shape and colour.
- Fault behaviour: if abnormal incoming pulses are detected from another energizer, the device must stop emitting pulses immediately and may only resume after at least 10 s. A defined verification procedure with six abnormal pulses (1.5 s spacing, 1 000 V peak, specified energy and load ranges) is included.
Applications and who uses this standard
This standard (and draft amendments) is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of electric fence energizers designing cascading or intelligent systems.
- Product safety engineers and conformity assessors validating designs against electrical strength and leakage requirements.
- Test laboratories performing high-voltage, insulation and functional fault tests.
- Livestock facility designers and installers specifying safe fence energizers for farms and animal containment.
- Regulators and certification bodies reviewing safety documentation for energizers.
Related standards
- EN 60335 series (general safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances).
- EN 61032 (test probe B) referenced for accessibility/testing.
