Overview
EN 3475-807:2002 - "Aerospace series - Cables, electrical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 807: Transfer impedance" is a CEN/AECMA standard that specifies accepted laboratory methods for measuring the transfer impedance of aircraft electrical cables. Transfer impedance quantifies how well a cable screening (shield) prevents external electromagnetic currents from coupling into the conductors - a key property for aircraft EMC and signal integrity.
This standard is intended to be used together with EN 3475-100 (general test-method requirements) and was prepared under AECMA procedures and adopted as a European Standard.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Defines measurement procedures to determine the transfer impedance (ZT) of cable screening under controlled test conditions.
- Specimen preparation: Test specimens must be stripped and prepared for connection to measuring equipment. For multicore cables, conductors are connected together at both ends; for multiscreened cables, screens are tied together at both ends.
- Method A - cable leakage method:
- Simple technique suitable for lower transfer impedance measurements (document cites validity up to around 10^-5 W/m and to 10 MHz).
- Typical setup uses ~1 m of cable placed inside a sealed copper enclosure (dimensions shown in the standard, example 500 mm × 660 mm) with specific lead-throughs for the signal generator and detector.
- Cable is driven via its characteristic impedance Zo; detector measures induced voltage to compute transfer impedance.
- Method B - susceptible cable method:
- Uses a variable-frequency power generator and a field-intensity (selective) voltmeter.
- Conductors inside the screening are shorted at both ends; external interference current is measured (clamp-on tester or derived from generator output and series resistor). The interference voltage between conductor and screening is measured to determine ZT.
- Pass/fail requirement: Measured ZT values shall be below the limits specified in the applicable product standard for the cable.
Applications and users
- Ensures cable screening performance for aircraft electrical systems where EMC and low signal coupling are critical.
- Typical users:
- Aerospace cable manufacturers (qualification and production control)
- EMC and environmental test laboratories
- Aircraft systems engineers and integrators verifying cable performance to product standards
- Certification authorities assessing compliance with aerospace wiring specifications
Related standards
- EN 3475-100 (Aerospace cables - Test methods - Part 100: General) - normative reference and required companion document.
- Product-specific EN/industry standards that define allowable ZT limits for particular cable types.
