European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 158, Head protection, in
accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 10256-2:2016), which has been
technically revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— Definitions were reordered to reflect their location in the document and updated.
— Clauses 4.1, 4.4, 5.1 and 5.7 were updated.
— In Clause 4.4 a), the degree of the upward plane was changed from 35° to 25° to align with EN 13087-
6:2012.
— Apparatus was added to Clause 5.4 and the procedure updated.
— Clause 5.6 (field of vision) was modified to refer to EN 13087-6:2012.
— Clause 5.7.3 was updated to refer to a revised Annex A.
— Table 1 was revised to include additional tests.
— Annex A was expanded to include more information on the testing equipment and procedure.

Introduction
Ice hockey is a high speed, collision sport in which there is a risk of injury. The objective of ISO 10256-
2:202x is to specify performance requirements and test methods for head protectors for use in ice
hockey considering the risks inherent in participating in the sport, many of which cannot be eliminated
by protective equipment.
Ice hockey head protectors afford no protection from neck or spinal injury. Severe head, brain, or
spinal injuries, including paralysis or death, can occur despite using an ice hockey head protector in
accordance with this part of ISO 10256. By playing this sport, participants accept the risk of serious
injury, paralysis and/or death.
The intention of head protection used in ice hockey is to reduce the frequency and severity of localized
injuries to the head. The protective function is such that the force from impacts against the head
protector is distributed and dampened and the penetration of objects is counteracted.
To achieve optimal head protector performance and to ensure stability on the head, a head protector
is intended fitted as closely as possible consistent with comfort. In use, it is essential that the head
protector is securely fastened, with any retention system adjusted in accordance with manufacturer’s
instructions.
Subcommittee 5 is aware that head protector performance specifications are required to reduce the risk
of injury in ice hockey. There was consensus that most of today’s head protectors meet the performance
requirements of this part of ISO 10256. The goal of the subcommittee is to promote the use of better
materials and/or construction as they become available to meet the future requirements of the sport
of ice hockey. Subcommittee 5 recognizes that to provide for comfort, fit and use, head protectors are
intended to have a mass consistent with the appropriate performance characteristics.

1 Scope
ISO 10256-2:202x specifies performance requirements and test methods for head protectors for use in
ice hockey and is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 10256-1:202x.
Requirements and the corresponding test methods, where appropriate, are given for the following:
a) materials and construction
b) protected area (coverage);
c) penetration resistance (test blade);
d) field of vision;
e) shock absorbing capacity;
f) retention system properties;
g) test report;
h) markings; and
i) information for users.
This part of ISO 10256 applies to head protectors worn by
— ice hockey players (not goalkeepers, except where ISO 10256-4:202x references this Standard), and
— referees.
2 Normative references

extent of vision through the protector in the ‘as worn’ position.
3.3
crack
a condition in which the protector breaks through the full thickness of the material without complete
separation of parts.

fracturing (breakage)
a condition in which there is a complete separation into pieces or fragments of any part of the protector.
3.5
retention system
system which secures the head protector firmly to the head by passing under the mandible in whole or
in part when adjusted in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions,

central vertical axis
axis lying along the intersection of the median and mid-frontal planes.

device made of low resonance material that couples mechanically with the ball arm connector of the
drop assembly in place of the impact test headform and is used for system verification of the drop
assembly.

3.15
head protector model
category of head protector that have the same essential characteristics and dimensions

4 Requirements
4.1 Materials and construction
The head protector shall meet the requirements given in ISO 10256-1:202x, Clause 4.1 and 4.2 and
tested in accordance with ISO 10256-1:202x, Clause 5.1 and 5.2.
4.2 Protected area
4.2.1 General
When tested in accordance with 5.4 the head protector shall cover the area above the line BCDEF in
Figure 3.
4.2.2 Ear aperture
No ear aperture (opening) in the protected area shall have a linear dimension exceeding 38 mm. The
distance to any other edge of the head protector shall be not less than 20 mm from any edge. The ear
aperture shall be completely surrounded by the outer covering of the head protector (shell).
4.2.3 Ventilation
Head protectors shall be designed and manufactured in a way that perspiration resulting from use is
minimised.
4.3 Penetration (test blade)
Except for the ear apertures and when tested in accordance with 5.5, there shall be no contact with the
bare headform by the test blade within the protected area.

4.4 Field of vision
When tested in accordance with 5.6, under ambient conditions, the head protector shall not interfere
with vision within the field bounded by the following planes:
a) upward - a plane tilted 25° upwards from the reference plane, intersecting the surface of the
headform at a point 31mm to the left (L1) and right (L2) of the median plane (see Figure 6a).
b) downward – a plane tilted 60° downward from the basic plane intersecting the surface of the
headform at a point 31mm to the left (K1) and right (K2) of the median plane (see Figure 6a).
c) temporal – a plane parallel to the mid-frontal plane, intersecting the reference plane on the front
surface of the headform at a point located 31 mm to the left (L1) and right (L2) of the median plane
(See Figure 6b).
4.5 Shock absorbing capacity
When tested in accordance with 5.7
a) no single impact shall exceed a peak acceleration of 275 g under all test conditions;
b) the outer covering (shell) shall remain intact, with no fracturing or cracks visible through the
thickness of the shell; and
c) any size-adjustment mechanism for fit shall not become undone unintentionally.
4.6 Retention system
4.6.1 Straps
The head protector shall be fitted with a retention system, allowing the head protector to be placed on
or removed from the head, and consisting of a strap that passes under the mandible and is fitted with a
device to adjust and maintain tension in the system.
The strap that passes under the mandible shall not be less than 13 mm wide and shall not include a chin
cup.
4.6.2 Extensibility and strength
When tested in accordance with 5.8.3
a) the displacement of the roller holder shall not exceed 25 mm during the load range between 5 N
and 110 N; and
b) the release force shall be not less than 110 N and not more than 300 N.
5 Test methods
5.1 Tolerances
Unless otherwise specified, Clause 6 in ISO 10256-1:202x shall apply.
5.2 Sampling
Only new and complete head protectors in every size and model as offered for sale shall be tested.
The minimum number of samples for a complete test shall be four and marked one to four. The HPI and
the corresponding head protector size range shall be provided by the manufacturer.

5.3 Conditioning temperatures
Head protector samples shall be conditioned under ambient, low and elevated temperature conditions
in accordance with ISO 10256-1:202x, Clauses 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4
5.4 Placing and adjusting head protectors
All head protectors shall be placed and adjusted on the largest headform for the head protector size
range in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions (HPI).
5.5 Determination of protected area
5.5.1 Test apparatus
The apparatus shall consist of:
a) a full headform in accordance with EN 960:2006 marked with the protected area in 4.2 and
Figure 3;
b) a load of 50 N.
5.5.2 Procedure
Place and adjust the head protector in accordance with 5.4. Apply the load of 50 N to the crown of the
head protector to seat the head protector to the headform.
When viewed perpendicular to the median and frontal planes, the head protector shall cover the
protected area.
Inspect the head protector to ensure that
a) the ear aperture (opening) meets the requirement of 4.2.2.
b) it is designed and manufactured in a way that perspiration resulting from use is minimised.
5.6 Penetration test
5.6.1 Test apparatus
The apparatus shall consist of:
a) a headform in accordance with EN 960:2006;
b) a steel test blade in accordance with Figure 5; and
c) a load of 50 N
5.6.2 Procedure
Place and adjust the head protector in accordance with 5.4. Apply the load of 50 N to the crown of the
head protector in order to seat the head protector to the headform.
Using the end of the test-blade, attempt to make contact with the bare head form within the protected
area (see Figure 3), without force, through all openings of the head protector (except the ear apertures)
5.7 Field of vision test method
When positioned in accordance with 5.4, and tested according to EN 13087-6, the head protector shall
meet the field of vision requirements in 4.4

5.8 Shock absorbing test
5.8.1 Impact sites
5.8.1.1 General
Impact sites shall be six prescribed impact sites (see 3.11, 5.8.1.2, Figure 1) and two non-prescribed
impact sites (see 5.8.1.3).
The impact direction shall be perpendicular to the headform surface at all impact sites.
5.8.1.2 Prescribed sites
The six prescribed impact sites shall be as follows:
a) crown – point where the central vertical axis meets the top of the headform
b) front – point on the median plane which is 50 mm above the anterior intersection with the reference
plane
c) front boss – point 25 mm above the reference plane and 45° in a clockwise or counter-clockwise
direction about the central vertical axis
d) side – point 25 mm above the reference plane on the mid-frontal plane on either side of the
headform
e) rear – point at the posterior intersection of the median and reference plane
f) rear boss – point on the reference plane and 135° in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction
about the central vertical axis
