EN 60811-201:2012 (IEC 60811-201:2012) specifies standardized methods for the measurement of insulation thickness of non-metallic materials used in electric and optical fibre cables. It covers common insulating compounds (cross-linked polymers, PVC, PE, PP, etc.) and is intended to be used together with EN/IEC 60811‑100 (general provisions). This part replaces clause 8.1 of the earlier IEC 60811‑1‑1 and is adopted by CENELEC/CLC for harmonized European use.

    • Typically six radial measurements (e.g., at ~60° intervals) for circular or stranded conductors; specific measurement patterns apply for sectoral, uneven or flat profiles (figures provided in the standard).
    • Exclude unremovable screening layers from the measurement; use a measuring microscope for opaque insulations with such layers.
    • First measurement must be taken at the thinnest point.
  • Reporting and evaluation:
    • Report in accordance with IEC 60811‑100 and include measuring equipment specifications.
    • Readings: two decimal places for thickness ≥ 0.5 mm, three estimated decimals for < 0.5 mm.
    • Result evaluation follows the relevant cable standard’s acceptance criteria.
