EN 14601:2005 (E) 5 1 Scope This European Standard is applicable to manually operated end cocks designed to cut-off the brake pipe and the main reservoir pipe of the air brake and compressed air system of rail vehicles; without taking the type of vehicles and track-gauge into consideration. Sometimes expressed in statistical term as a probability. 4 Requirements 4.1 General Workmanship and quality shall be ensured by the manufacturer, therefore quality assurance is the responsibility of the manufacturer under the agreement with the purchaser. Warranty of the part is also the responsibility of the manufacturer in accordance with the agreement with the purchaser. 4.2 Operating conditions The end cock shall be able to function under the following conditions: a) Where the air quality of the compressed air specified in ISO 8573-1:2001, class 4-4-5. This requirement is verified when tests are carried out in accordance with 5.2. b) In the temperature range for the environmental conditions to which the rail vehicle is submitted during its operation and at least for a temperature range defined by the class T2 of EN 50125-1. The purchaser can specify a higher temperature value if operational constraints demand it. This requirement is tested in accordance with 5.3.3, 5.3.7 and 5.3.12. c) The end cock shall withstand the external corrosion due to normal atmospheric pollutants as specified in EN 50125-1. The end cock is tested in accordance with the test shown in 5.3.13. d) In the vibrational environment of the rail vehicle on which it is mounted and it shall remain in either the open or closed position. The cock shall be tested in accordance with 5.3.10. SIST EN 14601:2005



EN 14601:2005 (E) 10 4.3 Functional characteristics 4.3.1 General The operating handle of the end cock shall be equipped with a detent or latch system. The requirements given in 4.3.2 to 4.3.10 are defined to ensure the air flow through the brake pipe and main reservoir pipe and ensure no malfunction of the cock after the brake pipe test (as part of the brake test before the trains start). 4.3.2 Open and closed positions The handle position shall be the same on any vehicle, so the opening and closing of the cock shall be achieved by turning its spindle through a minimum of 90° and not more than 100°. Stops shall be provided at the extremes of rotation, so that the open and closed positions are achieved positively. The open and closed positions are defined in 3.4.1 and 3.4.2. 4.3.3 Lubrication It shall be possible to operate the end cock at all pressures without additional lubrication. 4.3.4 Venting port The end cock shall incorporate a venting port with a minimum area of 80 mm2, arranged so that when the cock is closed the compressed air from the coupling hose end of the cock (outlet port connected to the next vehicle) can be exhausted to atmosphere. Venting shall have commenced when the operation of the end cock has reduced the cross-sectional area of the bore of the end cock by one third. The venting port shall not be able to be obstructed when the cock is mounted on the rail vehicle. The venting port shall be designed and arranged such that the under usual operation, the operating personnel are not endangered by the exhaust-flow, or objects carried by it, nor by excessive noise level. 4.3.5 Torque All end cocks with mechanical detent, or with latch engaged shall not be operated by vibration or shocks. The end cock shall be capable of manual operation therefore the operating torque of the handle shall be in the range of 9 Nm to 20 Nm for end cocks with detent and a maximum of 6 Nm for cocks with latch. The torque is tested in accordance with 5.3.3. Torque drifts shall not be allowed. This requirement is tested in accordance with 5.3.9. 4.3.6 Spindle handle of the end cock Where the handle is detachable and the unique angular relationship between it and the spindle is not constructionally assured, it shall not be possible to assemble the handle to the spindle except where the axis of the handle and the diametrical spindle mark are aligned and the spindle shall be marked in accordance with Figure 5 or as otherwise specified by the purchaser. The relative position of the handle and spindle, when assembled, shall be maintained under all operating and environmental conditions. The notch in accordance with Figure 5 indicates the position of the spindle (open/closed). NOTE
Detachable handles and the spindle should be designed in such a way that an unambiguous angular relationship between handle and spindle will remain. SIST EN 14601:2005

2 Figure 5 — Marking on end of the spindle 4.3.7 Fall time The air passages shall be designed to minimise the air flow losses within the cock and the cross-sectional area shall not be smaller than the cross-sectional area of a plain pipe of 25 mm internal diameter. The pressure fall time should not be longer than that for an equivalent pipe of the same nominal diameter, as tested in 5.3.4. 4.3.8 Leakage The sealing arrangement within the end cock shall prevent any unacceptable loss of air. The allowable loss of air shall be less than the leakage values when tested in accordance with 5.3.7. 4.3.9 Vacuum withstanding When the purchaser requires a vacuum withstand, the end cock shall be able to function with a pressure of 0,75 bar below atmospheric pressure. The leakage is tested in accordance with 5.3.12. 4.3.10 Pneumatic shocks The components shall be able to resist the pneumatic shocks to which the cock is subject when opening quickly. This requirement is tested in accordance with 5.3.6. 4.4 Constructional characteristics 4.4.1 External appearance The external surfaces of the end cock shall be free of sharp edges which could be a danger to those persons handling the cock or to other equipment in the proximity of the end cock. This requirement shall be checked while testing the other constructional features in accordance with 5.3.2. 4.4.2 Connections The body of the end cock shall have an internal thread G1i-EN ISO 228-2 or G1¼i-EN ISO 228-2, for connection to the brake or reservoir pipe. The end of the body adjacent to the internal threads shall be of hexagonal form or have flats (see Annex A). If required by the Purchaser, the body end can have a flat sealing face for « Flange » type of connections. The body of the end cock shall have an external thread for connection to the coupling hose in accordance with Annex A, and checked in accordance with 5.3.2. 4.4.3 Space envelope The end cock shall be contained in the space envelope in Annex A. Sizes are checked in accordance with 5.3.2. SIST EN 14601:2005



EN 14601:2005 (E) 12 The cock handle shall be designed according to ergonomic principles taking into account, that the operator wears protective gloves. There shall be enough space between the handle and the vent housing to prevent risk of crushing. 4.4.4 Mechanical shocks The end cock body shall withstand a mechanical shock with an energy value equal to 120 J. This characteristic is tested in accordance with 5.3.11. 4.4.5 Resistance to torque When a torque of 200 N·m is applied to the handle, no permanent deformation shall occur to any part of the end cock. This requirement is tested in accordance with 5.3.14. 4.4.6 Life expectancy The life expectancy shall be such that the end cock is able to function satisfactorily after 10 000 cycles in accordance with 5.3.8. 5 Type test methods 5.1 Sampling for type test For the type test, a sample of ten end cocks produced under the condition of series production shall be tested. 5.2 Test requirements All the type tests shall be performed at 20 °C ± 5°C and the quality of the compressed air equivalent to class 4-4-5 specified in ISO 8573-1:2001. All pressures quoted are gauge pressures, not absolute pressures. The tests marked with a « * » shall be performed additionally at T2 specified in the EN 50125-1 and at a wider temperature range if otherwise agreed between purchaser and supplier (pass/fail criteria for this case shall be agreed between purchaser and supplier). 5.3 Test procedure 5.3.1 Principle The tests shall be carried out in the order shown in Table 1. This table is designed to avoid unnecessary test repetitions. SIST EN 14601:2005

Tests shall be performed at 20 °± 5 °C and extreme temperatures. 5.3.2 Check of physical and geometrical characteristics 5.3.2.1 Procedure The requirement of 4.3.1, 4.3.2 and 4.3.3 4.3.5, shall be checked using appropriate measuring instruments, in accordance with the specification. Unless specified in the text the threaded parts shall be checked by GO/NO-GO gauges. 5.3.2.2 Pass/fail criteria The result shall be satisfactory if all the specified characteristics are met. EN 14601:2005 (E) 14 5.3.3 Measurement of the operating torque 5.3.3.1 Procedure The operating torque is measured with a torque wrench, which can be equipped with extensometric gauges connected to reading equipment. The value of the torque is taken into consideration after four cycles « Open - Closed - Open ». The duration of one cycle is 2 s. The test shall be carried out with temperature of – 40 °C + 20 °C, + 35 °C, or other specified extreme temperatures successively without test pressure and with static pressure of bar1005,0−. 5.3.3.2 Pass/fail criteria The torque value shall be in accordance with 4.3.5. 5.3.4 Measurement of the pressure fall time 5.3.4.1 Measurement of the pressure fall time through end cock 5.3.4.1.1 General The test consists of Operation 1 for calibration of the test assembly and Operation 2 for measuring the time to bleed - off a reservoir of 100 l charged to a pressure of 10 bar, using a test assembly as shown in Figure 6. 5.3.4.1.2 Preliminary phase for Operations 1 and 2 The isolating cock (1) is closed, and the 100 l reservoir is charged by opening the isolating cock (4), and closing it when the reservoir is charged to 10 bar. 5.3.4.1.3 Operation 1 Open isolating cock (1) and measure the time t1 for the pressure to fall from 9 bar to 1 bar, as indicated by the transducer (2). For operation 2, replace the control pipe with the end cock to be tested ensuring the handle is in the open position. Operation 2 has to be performed in both flow directions of the test specimen. 5.3.4.1.4 Operation 2 Open isolating cock (1) and measure the time t2 for the pressure to fall from 9 bar to 1bar as indicated by the transducer. Repeat the test. 5.3.4.1.5 Pass/fail criteria The result is satisfactory if t2 is smaller or equal to the average t1. SIST EN 14601:2005
