Overview

EN ISO 6218:2019 (ISO 6218:2019) is the CEN-endorsed international standard for coupling devices used on inland navigation vessels. It covers manually‑ and power‑operated coupling devices for rope connections applied when assembling push tows or coupling vessels alongside. The standard specifies safety requirements, main dimensions, designation and testing rules to ensure stable positioning of coupled vessels and to protect operators during creation, operation and separation of rope connections.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and application: Requirements for coupling devices used in push‑tow and alongside coupling operations on inland waterways.
  • Safety requirements (Clause 4): General safety principles for components and operation to protect operators from accidents during assembly, operation and separation of rope connections.
  • Design and construction (Clause 6): Requirements for rope drums, handwheels, power‑operated equipment, brakes, arresting and protective devices, guide tracks and foundations.
  • Dimensions and characteristic values (Clause 7): Main dimensional rules and characteristic values for manually and power‑operated coupling devices.
  • Material and markings (Clauses 8 and 11): Material considerations and required marking for identification and safe use.
  • Operating and assembly instructions (Clause 9): Mandatory user, assembly and maintenance information to accompany devices.
  • Testing and designation: Normative provisions for individual and type testing (Annex A) and examples of designation.
  • Notable technical updates (2019 edition):
    • The previous limitation on rope speed was removed.
    • Minimum drum diameter requirement changed to 12 × maximum rope diameter.
    • Terminology updated from “wire rope” to “rope” to cover both wire and textile ropes.

Practical applications

Who uses EN ISO 6218:2019:

  • Shipbuilders and naval architects specifying coupling device interfaces for inland navigation vessels.
  • Manufacturers of manually and power‑operated coupling devices designing to standard dimensions and safety rules.
  • Vessel operators and ship crews for safe operation and maintenance of push tow and coupled configurations.
  • Classification societies, regulatory bodies and procurement teams for conformity assessment and equipment acceptance.
  • Testing laboratories performing type and individual equipment tests per the standard.

Primary use cases:

  • Designing and installing coupling systems for push tugs, barges and coupled convoys.
  • Ensuring operator safety during mooring, coupling and decoupling operations.
  • Specifying procurement requirements and performing acceptance testing.

Related standards

  • Supersedes EN ISO 6218:2015; identical adoption of ISO 6218:2019 by CEN.
  • Prepared by ISO/TC 8 (Ships and marine technology) in collaboration with CEN/TC 15 (Inland navigation vessels).

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www .iso .org/patents).
Any trade name used in this document is information given for the convenience of users and does not

For an explanation of the voluntary nature of standards, the meaning of ISO specific terms and
expressions related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to the
World Trade Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see www .iso
.org/iso/foreword .html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8, Ships and marine technology,
Subcommittee SC 7, Inland navigation vessels.
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 6218:2015), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— the limitation of the rope speed has been deleted (former Clause 4.3);
— the minimum drum diameter has been changed to be 12 times the maximum rope diameter;
— “wire rope” has been replaced with "rope", because the use of wire- or textile-ropes is not relevant
in this document;
— editorial corrections have been made and the figures have been improved.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www .iso .org/members .html.
