Overview

prEN 856 (FprEN 856) is a CEN draft specification for rubber-covered spiral wire reinforced hydraulic hoses and hose assemblies. It covers four hose constructions - 4SP, 4SH, R13 and R15 - with nominal bores from 6 to 51 mm. The standard specifies performance, dimensional and testing requirements (hydrostatic, impulse, cold flexibility, abrasion, ozone, adhesion and fluid resistance) for hydraulic applications using ISO 6743-4 compatible fluids (excluding certain flame‑retardant HFD types), water‑based and water fluids. It does not cover end fittings or underground‑mining hoses.

Keywords: hydraulic hoses, spiral wire reinforced, hose assemblies, pressure rating, hydrostatic testing, impulse test, EN 856, CEN.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and hose types: Defines four types - 4SP (4‑steel wire spiral medium pressure), 4SH (4‑steel wire spiral extra high pressure), R13 and R15 (multiple spiral heavy‑duty high temperature).
  • Materials and construction: Rubber lining and cover (oil/water resistant), alternating spiral steel wire plies separated by insulating rubber layers.
  • Dimensions and tolerances: Inside/outside diameters, concentricity and length tolerances for hoses and hose assemblies measured per EN ISO 4671.
  • Pressure performance: Specifies maximum working pressure, proof pressure and burst pressure per type and nominal bore (hydrostatic testing per EN ISO 1402).
  • Impulse durability: Impulse testing per EN ISO 6803 - 4SP/4SH: 133% of working pressure, ≥400,000 cycles at 100 °C; R13/R15: 120% of working pressure, ≥500,000 cycles at 120 °C, with no leakage before the required cycles.
  • Bend and cold performance: Minimum bend radii by type and cold‑temperature flexibility requirements (EN ISO 10619‑2).
  • Fluid and environmental resistance: Tests for oil resistance (ISO 1817), water/water‑based fluid resistance, abrasion (ISO/TS 20444), ozone resistance (EN ISO 7326), and adhesion between components (EN ISO 8033).
  • Limitations: Not suitable for castor‑oil or ester‑based fluids; end fittings not specified in this document.

Applications and users

This standard is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories, specifiers and purchasers of hydraulic hoses and hose assemblies used in mobile and industrial hydraulic systems where high pressure, temperature resistance and long impulse life are required. Typical applications include construction and agricultural machinery, industrial hydraulics, and mobile equipment requiring spiral‑reinforced hoses with defined pressure ratings and validated test performance.
