The method does not apply to alloyed steels having niobium and/or tungsten contents higher than 0,1 %.

Overview

EN 10361:2015 (CEN) specifies an ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometric) method for the determination of nickel content (mass fraction) in alloyed steels. The method covers nickel mass fractions from 5.0 % to 25.0 % and excludes steels containing niobium (Nb) and/or tungsten (W) above 0.1 %. It defines sample preparation, reagents, apparatus, calibration strategy and performance expectations to ensure accurate, traceable nickel analysis in high-alloy matrices.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & limits: Nickel determination between 5.0–25.0 %; not applicable where Nb or W > 0.1 %.
  • Analytical principle: Acid dissolution (HCl + HNO3), filtration and ignition of insoluble residue, silica removal with HF, fusion of residue with potassium hydrogen sulphate (or potassium disulphate), dissolution of the melt and ICP-OES measurement.
  • Matrix-matched calibration & bracketing: Calibration solutions must closely match the sample matrix; bracketing at 0.95–1.05 of the approximate Ni content to compensate matrix spectral interferences.
  • Internal reference element: Recommended internal standards (e.g., Sc at 363.1 nm or Y at 371.0 nm) to correct for instrumental drift and nebulization effects, provided the spectrometer supports simultaneous measurement.
  • Reagents & safety: Use analytical-grade acids (HCl, HNO3, HF - with HF safety warnings), H2SO4, KHSO4/K2S2O7 and certified nickel standards (5 g/L, 10 g/L).
  • Apparatus & performance: Class A volumetric glassware (EN ISO 648, EN ISO 1042), platinum crucibles, and an ICP-OES instrument meeting performance criteria in Annex A. Sampling per EN ISO 14284.
  • Documentation: Procedure, expression of results and test reporting requirements are specified, with validation precision data and performance checks in informative annexes.
