Overview

EN 13523-0:2021 - "Coil coated metals - Test methods - Part 0: General introduction" is the CEN/CENELEC introductory document for the EN 13523 series. It defines the overall scope and common terminology used across the coil coated metals test-method suite, and it prescribes how to take representative samples and prepare test panels used by the individual test methods. The standard also sets out conditioning and general test-environment rules to ensure reproducible results.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope and common definitions
    • Establishes terms used throughout EN 13523 (examples: coil coated metal, coil coating, coat, coating material, organic coating).
    • Aligns many definitions with EN ISO 4618 and notes specific adaptations for coil coating.
  • Coating categories
    • Defines category 1 coating (dry film thickness up to 60 μm) and category 2 coating (dry film thickness > 60 μm or laminated plastics film).
  • Sampling
    • Requires representative samples taken from the full width of the coil unless otherwise agreed; warns that sampling direction (with/across rolling direction) can influence some test results.
  • Preparation of test panels
    • Test panels must be prepared from representative samples and be flat and of the size specified by the relevant individual test methods.
  • Conditioning and test conditions
    • Panels should be brought to ambient temperature before testing.
    • If conditioning is required or in dispute, panels are conditioned at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH for at least 24 hours in accordance with EN 23270.
    • Tests are carried out at ambient conditions, with dispute resolution defaulting to EN 23270 environmental settings.
  • Normative references and series structure
    • Lists normative references and provides the complete list of EN 13523 parts (e.g., film thickness, gloss, adhesion, salt spray, UV resistance, abrasion and others).

Applications and Who Uses It

  • Manufacturers of coil coated steel and aluminium use EN 13523-0 to standardize sampling, panel preparation and testing conditions across production and QA processes.
  • Test laboratories rely on Part 0 as the procedural baseline before applying specific test methods from the EN 13523 series.
  • Specifiers, architects and product designers reference this document to understand the test basis behind performance claims for coil coated products.
  • Procurement and certification bodies use it to ensure consistent, reproducible testing in contracts and conformity assessments.

Related Standards

  • EN ISO 4618 - Paints and varnishes: terms and definitions (source for many definitions)
  • EN 23270 (ISO 3270) - Temperatures and humidities for conditioning and testing
