Overview
SIST EN 1568-2:2018 is the European standard that defines the requirements for high expansion foam concentrates used in fire extinguishing systems, specifically for surface application on water-immiscible liquids (primarily flammable liquids that do not mix with water). High expansion fire-fighting foam is a critical tool in controlling and extinguishing fires involving liquid fuels, helping to prevent fire spread and re-ignition.
This standard, prepared by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), outlines the minimum chemical and physical properties, performance requirements, and marking rules for foam concentrates. It ensures that high expansion foams are effective, reliable, and safe for their intended firefighting applications.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application: Specifies foam concentrates for high expansion intended for use on water-immiscible liquids, such as hydrocarbons and some chemicals.
- Performance Requirements: Sets minimum levels for properties like expansion ratio, drainage time, freezing point, sediment content, viscosity, pH, and surface tension.
- Stability and Safety: Includes tests for sedimentation, viscosity (both Newtonian and pseudo-plastic types), separation, container marking, and occupational/ecological health considerations.
- Marking Requirements: Details essential information that must be permanently and legibly marked on containers, such as foam type, standard reference, concentration, temperature limits, and safety warnings.
- Interoperability: Some concentrates meeting this standard may also conform to other parts of EN 1568, making them suitable for low and/or medium expansion applications as well.
- Change of Composition: Warns that any modification in product composition invalidates type approval, ensuring ongoing compliance and reliability.
Applications
High expansion foam concentrates are widely used in:
- Petrochemical Facilities: Protection against fires on large fuel surfaces and in storage areas with water-immiscible liquids.
- Industrial Storage and Warehouses: Safeguarding bulk liquids, flammable chemicals, and hazardous substances.
- Aviation and Marine: Dealing with fuel spill fires and safeguarding hangar or shipboard spaces.
- Tunnels & Enclosed Spaces: Rapidly filling volumes with foam to suppress fire and prevent oxygen supply.
- Municipal/Industrial Fire Brigades: As part of fixed or mobile firefighting systems for specialized risks involving flammable liquids.
Key practical considerations include:
- Correct usage and proportioning according to manufacturer’s guidance to maintain fire control effectiveness.
- Selection of foams based on compatibility with fresh and sea water, storage requirements (freezing/temperature), and interaction with firefighting powders or other agents.
- Assurance that foam concentrates do not present significant toxic hazards in their diluted, operational form.
Related Standards
For comprehensive fire extinguishing media management, the following related standards are important:
- EN 1568-1: Medium expansion foam concentrates for water-immiscible liquids.
- EN 1568-3: Low expansion foam concentrates for water-immiscible liquids.
- EN 1568-4: Low expansion foam concentrates for water-miscible liquids.
- EN ISO 3104: Determination of kinematic viscosity for petroleum products.
- EN ISO 3219: Viscosity measurement in polymers and resins.
- EN ISO 3696: Specifications for water used in laboratory settings.
- OECD & EU Regulations: For toxicity, environmental impact, and safety in the workplace (such as CLP and REACH regulations).
- EN 615, EN ISO 5923, EN 27201-1/2: Covering other extinguishing media like powders, carbon dioxide, and halons.
SIST EN 1568-2:2018 plays a vital role in fire safety by ensuring that high expansion foams not only meet stringent performance criteria but also address environmental and health considerations, making them reliable for diverse and demanding fire risk environments. Adherence to this and related standards ensures enhanced fire protection and regulatory compliance, supporting safer industrial and commercial operations.
