SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 is the Slovenian national standard identical to EN ISO 6941:2026, which adopts ISO 6941:2026. It specifies a laboratory method for measuring flame spread time on vertically oriented textile fabrics and textile-based industrial products when they are exposed to a small, defined flame. It is used by laboratories, manufacturers, and buyers who need comparable burn-behaviour data for fabrics, assemblies, and finished textile products.

What does SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 specify?

SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 specifies a test method for vertically oriented textile fabrics and industrial products made from single or multi-component textile fabrics, including coated, quilted, multilayered, sandwich combinations, and similar assemblies. The method measures how long a flame front takes to travel between marked positions after a small flame is applied under controlled conditions.

The introduction notes that the method assesses response to flame contact in a controlled laboratory setting and warns that the results may not represent situations with restricted air supply or exposure to large, intense heat sources. It also notes that seams and trimmings can be tested as part of the assembly in which they are used.

The document is organized into clauses 1 to 12, with two annexes:

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ANormative description and construction of the burner
Annex BInformative experimental techniques and practical guidance

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 6941:2026?

  • Clause 4, Principle - SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 applies a defined flame from a specified burner for 10 s to either the surface or the bottom edge of a vertically oriented specimen, then records the times for the flame front to sever marker threads at three positions. In practice, this gives a repeatable way to compare how fast flame spreads across a fabric.

  • Clause 5 and Annex A, Apparatus - SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 requires a mounting frame, a burner that can move from standby to operating position, a rectangular specimen holder with pins, a template for marking specimen locations, suitable gas, three timing devices, and white mercerized cotton marker threads. In practice, the accuracy of the result depends heavily on using the specified hardware and setting it up correctly.

  • Clause 6, Precautions - SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 requires equipment materials that are not harmed by corrosive combustion products, enough surrounding air volume to avoid oxygen depletion, and ventilation to clear smoke and fumes between tests. In practice, this protects both the test result and the operator, especially in enclosed or open-fronted test enclosures.

  • Clauses 7 and 8, Sampling and atmosphere - SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 calls for six test specimens, with specimen orientation marked by length direction and width direction, and an extra specimen for setup. Specimens are conditioned for at least 24 h at 20 °C and 65 % relative humidity unless otherwise specified, then tested within 2 min of removal; testing is carried out at 10 °C to 30 °C, 35 % to 65 % relative humidity, and air movement below 0.2 m/s. In practice, this keeps moisture and airflow from distorting the burn behaviour.

  • Clause 9, Setting up the apparatus - SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 defines two setup routes: Procedure A for surface ignition and Procedure B for bottom edge ignition. Procedure A uses a horizontal flame reach adjustment, while Procedure B uses a vertical flame height adjustment and an inclined burner position. In practice, the choice of procedure affects how the flame meets the specimen, so the setup must match the intended test mode.

  • Clause 10, Test procedure - SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 requires six fresh specimens for each test set, with the marker threads attached before ignition and the exposure surface and orientation recorded. The test flame is applied for 10 s or for the ignition time determined in ISO 6940 testing, and the times to sever the lower, middle, and upper marker threads are recorded for each specimen. In practice, the upper thread time is the most useful comparison point when ranking materials.

  • Clause 11 and Clause 12, Precision and report - SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 notes that repeatability depends strongly on material type, with knitted fabrics and shrinking fabrics needing careful mounting, and it recommends reporting sagging problems. The test report must identify the standard, gas used, date, ambient conditions, specimen attachment method, specimen identification and pre-treatment, exposure surface, ignition mode, ignition time, individual severance times, deviations, and unusual observations. In practice, this makes the result traceable and easier to compare across laboratories.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 define?

  • Flame application time - the period for which the ignition flame is applied to the test specimen.

  • Flame spread time - the time taken for a flame on a burning material to travel a specified distance under specified test conditions.

  • Surface ignition - the test setup in which the burner flame is applied to the surface of the vertically mounted specimen.

  • Bottom edge ignition - the test setup in which the burner flame is applied from below to the bottom edge of the vertically mounted specimen.

  • Marker threads - the cotton thread loops placed at three positions beside the specimen so the operator can measure when the flame front reaches each point.

  • Critical ignition time - the ignition time determined in ISO 6940 testing and used instead of the default 10 s exposure when that value is selected.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 6941:2026?

SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 is used by textile test laboratories, quality control teams, and product development engineers who need a controlled measure of flame spread on fabrics and textile assemblies. It is also relevant to manufacturers of coated, quilted, multilayered, and sandwich textile products, because the method can be applied to complete assemblies rather than only to simple fabrics.

Buyers, specifiers, and conformity assessment teams use the document when they need a comparable laboratory result for burn behaviour. It is especially useful when seams, trimmings, or different fabric directions need to be evaluated as part of the finished textile construction.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 supersedes EN ISO 6941:2003 and replaces the second edition of ISO 6941. The changes stated in the document are:

  • Figure 1 b) was corrected, including the angular dimension line and the shape of the gas jet tip.
  • Figure 3 a) and Figure 3 b) were revised to show the test specimen more clearly.
  • The revision is described as clarifying the document without structural changes.

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 6941:2026?

  • ISO 4880, Burning behaviour of textiles and textile products - Vocabulary - provides the vocabulary and definitions used by the document.

  • ISO 6940, Textile fabrics - Burning behaviour - Determination of ease of ignition of vertically oriented specimens - provides the related ignition method and the critical ignition time referenced in the procedure.

  • ISO 2768-1, General tolerances - Part 1: Tolerances for linear and angular dimensions without individual tolerance indications - is cited in the figure notes for dimensional tolerances on the apparatus drawings.

What does the SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 document contain?

SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 contains the scope, normative references, terms and definitions, principle, apparatus requirements, precautions, sampling rules, conditioning and test atmosphere, setup instructions, the two test procedures, precision guidance, and the reporting requirements. The technical heart of the document is the pair of procedures for surface ignition and bottom edge ignition, which are supported by detailed apparatus and setup instructions.

The document also includes figures for the burner, the specimen holder, and the burner positions and flame adjustments used in both procedures. Annex A describes the burner construction in detail, while Annex B gives practical experimental techniques such as handling, safety, mounting, and specimen behaviour during testing.

ISO 6941:2026(en)
Introduction
This method is one of two closely related methods of test for the inflammability of textile. This method
[1]
determines the “flame spread time” as defined in ISO 4880 . The other method observes and measures
[2]
“ease of ignition” (seeISO 6940 ).
The method given in this document assesses the properties of textile fabrics in response to flame contact
under controlled conditions. There is a possibility that results do not apply the situations where there is
restricted air supply or exposure to large sources of intense heat.
The influence of seams on the behaviour of textile fabrics can be determined by this method, the seam being
positioned within the test specimen so as to be subjected to the test flame. Whenever practicable, trimmings
are tested as part of the textile fabric assembly on which they are or will be used.
