Overview
SIST-TS CEN/TS 17729:2022 is a key technical specification developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) focused on soil improvers - substances used to enhance soil quality and fertility. This standard provides a comprehensive overview of methods for determining specific parameters in solid soil improvers used within the EU. These parameters include critical quality and safety indicators such as dry matter content, nitrogen, phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5), potassium oxide (K2O), chloride, copper, zinc, and quantity.
Applicable to solid fertilizing products classified under Product Function Category (PFC) 3 and PFC 7 as per Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, this document guides manufacturers, laboratories, and regulatory bodies in ensuring that soil improvers meet consistent quality and safety requirements.
Key Topics
Dry Matter Content
Measurement of the solid fraction in soil improvers to evaluate moisture levels using methods described in EN 13040:2007.Nitrogen Content
Determined via modified Kjeldahl or Dumas methods (EN 13654-1:2001 and EN 13654-2:2001), nitrogen is crucial for assessing fertilizer effectiveness.Phosphorus Pentoxide (P2O5) and Potassium Oxide (K2O) Content
Essential nutrients for plant growth; their quantities are measured using EN 13650:2001, which defines an aqua regia extraction process.Chloride Content
Chloride levels can impact soil and plant health; determination follows EN 13652:2001.Copper and Zinc Content
These micronutrients are necessary for soil and plant metabolism; their total content is assessed via methods in EN 13650:2001.Quantity Determination
Quantity is verified either by mass or volume according to EN 12580:2013 or EN 15238:2006 methodologies.Sampling and Sample Preparation
Procedures to obtain representative samples from soil improvers ensure reliable test results, as outlined in CEN/TS 17733:2022.
Practical Applications
SIST-TS CEN/TS 17729:2022 supports various stakeholders engaged in soil health management and agricultural production by providing standardized testing protocols that:
- Ensure compliance with EU regulations regarding soil improvers, enhancing product marketability across member states.
- Aid in quality control during manufacturing and processing of solid soil amendments.
- Support environmental safety by monitoring potentially harmful elements like excessive chloride or heavy metals.
- Facilitate accurate nutrient profiling, helping farmers and agronomists optimize fertilizer application for improved crop yields.
- Promote uniformity in testing across laboratories and countries, reducing discrepancies and improving consumer confidence.
Related Standards
This technical specification references several crucial EN and CEN/TS documents, including:
- CEN/TS 17732:2022 – Terminology for soil improvers and growing media.
- CEN/TS 17733:2022 – Sampling and sample preparation guidelines for soil improvers.
- EN 12580:2013 – Determination of quantity for soil improvers and growing media.
- EN 13040:2007 – Sample preparation and dry matter content methods.
- EN 13650:2001 – Extraction methods for soluble elements like P2O5, K2O, copper, and zinc.
- EN 13652:2001 – Chloride content determination methods.
- EN 13654-1 and 2:2001 – Nitrogen measurement using Kjeldahl and Dumas methods.
- EN 15238:2006 – Quantity determination for materials with larger particle sizes.
Together, these standards establish a harmonized framework for the evaluation and certification of soil improvers throughout the European Union, supporting the goals of Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 for sustainable fertilizing products.
By following SIST-TS CEN/TS 17729:2022, manufacturers and testing laboratories can ensure accurate assessment of nutrient content and safety parameters in soil improvers, ultimately promoting soil fertility, environmental protection, and agricultural productivity in compliance with EU regulatory requirements.
