Overview

SIST-TS CEN/TS 17729:2022 is a technical specification developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that offers an overview of methods for determining key parameters in solid soil improvers. This standard is essential for manufacturers, laboratories, and regulatory bodies involved with soil improvers and solid EU fertilizing products, particularly those classified as PFC 3 under Regulation (EU) 2019/1009. By defining standardized determination procedures, the document supports reliable product quality, safety assurance, and regulatory compliance across the European market.

Key Topics

SIST-TS CEN/TS 17729:2022 specifies the assessment of the following parameters in solid soil improvers:

  • Dry Matter Content: Measuring the proportion of dry material to ensure appropriate consistency and effectiveness.
  • Nitrogen Content: Assessing nutrient levels vital for soil fertility.
  • Phosphorus Pentoxide (P₂O₅) and Potassium Oxide (K₂O) Content: Determining these elements to support plant growth and soil health.
  • Chloride Content: Monitoring to prevent excess chloride, which can negatively impact crop yield.
  • Copper and Zinc Content: Verifying micronutrient presence while safeguarding against heavy metal contamination.
  • Quantity (by Volume or Mass): Ensuring accurate labelling and fair trade practices.

Sample collection and preparation, fundamental to producing reliable test results, are covered by cross-references to relevant CEN standards.

Applications

The practical applications of SIST-TS CEN/TS 17729:2022 span numerous stakeholders in the soil improvement and fertilizing products sector:

  • Manufacturers of Soil Improvers: Ensure that products consistently meet EU requirements and market expectations for nutrient content and safety.
  • Testing Laboratories: Provide reliable, harmonized analyses using prescribed reference methods, facilitating product certification and market access.
  • Regulatory Authorities: Support inspection and enforcement activities with standardized measurement criteria.
  • Importers and Exporters: Facilitate conformity assessment in international trade within the EU, enhancing product trust and acceptance.

This standard helps guarantee the safety, quality, and efficacy of soil improvers in the EU marketplace, contributing to sustainable agriculture and environmental protection.

Related Standards

Several key documents are referenced for testing protocols and terminology to ensure alignment across the sector:

  • CEN/TS 17732:2022 - Soil improvers and growing media - Terminology
  • CEN/TS 17733:2022 - Soil improvers and growing media - Sampling and sample preparation
  • EN 12580:2013 - Determination of quantity by volume for soil improvers and growing media
  • EN 13040:2007 - Determination of dry matter and laboratory compacted bulk density
  • EN 13650:2001 - Extraction of aqua regia soluble elements, including phosphorus pentoxide, potassium oxide, copper, and zinc
  • EN 13652:2001 - Extraction of water soluble nutrients and elements, including chloride
  • EN 13654-1:2001 & EN 13654-2:2001 - Determination of nitrogen by modified Kjeldahl or Dumas method
  • EN 15238:2006 - Determination of quantity for materials with particle size greater than 60 mm

In addition, compliance with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 is fundamental for products placed on the EU market.

Practical Value

By harmonizing analytical methods, SIST-TS CEN/TS 17729:2022 simplifies compliance, fosters transparency, and supports innovation in production. Adoption of these standards ensures reliable, comparable results across different laboratories and countries, facilitating product approval and market expansion for soil improvers within the European Union.
