Overview
The draft international standard oSIST prEN ISO 20500-6:2020:2020 specifies safety requirements for mobile feeders, a type of mobile road construction machinery used primarily to transfer paving materials continuously from trucks or windrows to paver-finishers. This document is part 6 of the ISO 20500 series and complements the common safety requirements defined in ISO 20500-1, addressing specific hazards associated with mobile feeders.
Developed under the auspices of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this standard applies to the entire lifecycle of mobile feeders - including design, operation, and foreseeable misuse - to ensure risk reduction and operator safety. It is categorized as a Type C standard as per ISO 12100, implying comprehensive technical safety measures tailored for this machinery category.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
The standard covers self-propelled mobile feeders, either rubber-tyred or crawler-mounted, utilized in road construction for continuous paving material transfer to paver-finishers. It complements and expands upon ISO 20500-1's common safety mandates without duplicating them.
Notably, hazards such as lightning are excluded from this part.Safety Requirements and Risk Reduction
Mobile feeders must conform to:- Safety principles outlined in ISO 12100 for relevant hazards not otherwise covered.
- Specific requirements regarding operator visibility, protection, noise control, vibration minimization, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), control systems, and safe access to operator stations and maintenance points.
Visibility Performance
Enhanced guidelines for visibility aim to prevent operator blind spots that could lead to accidents. Performance criteria establish measurable limits on visual masking, ensuring operators maintain clear sight lines during operation.Noise and Vibration Control
Annex A outlines detailed procedures for noise measurement in compliance with ISO 3744 and ISO 11201, facilitating the determination of noise levels emitted by mobile feeders during operation and at the operator's station to safeguard hearing health.Operators’ Manual and Signage
Comprehensive instructions for use, including warning signals, signs, and operator guidance, are mandated to improve operational safety awareness.Verification of Compliance
The document emphasizes testing and verification to confirm that all safety features and risk reduction measures comply with the standard's requirements.
Applications
oSIST prEN ISO 20500-6:2020 is essential for:
- Manufacturers of mobile feeders ensuring their equipment meets international safety benchmarks.
- Construction companies and contractors deploying road construction machinery to promote occupational safety and minimize accident risks.
- Regulatory bodies and safety inspectors evaluating compliance of road construction equipment with mandated safety standards.
By adhering to these specific safety requirements, stakeholders enhance equipment reliability, reduce downtime caused by accidents, and contribute to safer work environments in road paving operations.

ISO/DIS 20500-6:2020(E)
Introduction
This International Standard is a type C standard as stated in ISO 12100.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations and events are covered
are indicated in the scope of this International Standard.
When provisions of this type C standard are different from those which are stated in type A or B
standards, the provisions of this type C standard take precedence over the provisions of the other
standards for machines that have been designed and built according to the provisions of this type C
standard.
Mobile feeders are typically self-propelled machines used in the continuous transfer of paving materials
from trucks to paver finishers. Some mobile feeders are capable of feeding multiple paver finishers.

Mobile road construction machinery — Safety —
Part 6:
Specific requirements for mobile feeders
1 Scope
This part of ISO 20500, together with part 1, deals with all significant hazards for mobile feeders when
they are used as intended and under the conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the
manufacturer associated with the whole life time of the machine (see Annex C).
The requirements of this part are complementary to the common requirements formulated in
ISO 20500-1.
This document does not repeat the requirements from ISO 20500-1, but adds or replaces the
requirements for application for mobile feeder.
The following significant and relevant hazards are not covered in this document:
— Lightning.
