oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026 is a CEN draft European Standard for hand-held branchpipes used with fire and rescue service equipment. It sets the common minimum safety and performance requirements, together with test methods, classification, designation, instructions for use and maintenance, and marking. For manufacturers, test laboratories, and fire-service purchasers, it is the document that defines the shared baseline before the more specific branchpipe parts are applied.
What does oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026 specifies the common requirements for hand-held branchpipes for fire service use. It covers how these branchpipes are described, tested, classified, marked, and supplied with user information.
The scope is limited to branchpipes used by fire and rescue service equipment. It excludes branchpipes covered by the EN 671 series, foam branchpipes covered by EN 16712-3, CAFS branchpipes, powder branchpipes, and branchpipes with a maximum working pressure above 40 bar.
This part is the common part of the EN 15182 series. The additional product-specific requirements are in EN 15182-2, EN 15182-3, and EN 15182-4.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Classification of hand-held branchpipes for fire service use |
| Annex B | Informative guidance for acceptance test on delivery |
| Annex C | Normative datasheet for hand-held branchpipes |
| Annex D | Informative example of a completed datasheet |
The document is organized into Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Description, Classification, Requirements and verification, Designation, and Information for use, followed by the annexes.
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026?
oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026 sets the shared test basis and the main safety, handling, and documentation requirements for hand-held branchpipes. In practice, it tells manufacturers what to prove, what to mark, and what to hand over with the product.
Test basis and operating conditions
Clause 6.1 says all tests are type tests, carried out at the reference pressure and at water temperatures between 10 °C and 25 °C unless otherwise stated. That means the standard is aimed at design verification, not only routine shop checks.
Clause 6.1 also requires ergonomic design so the branchpipe can be operated safely while wearing firefighter's gloves complying with EN 659. It warns that PN 16 branchpipes shall not be used above 16 bar.
Mechanical design and handling
Clause 6.2.1 limits dimensions and mass to the values in the product-specific parts. Clause 6.2.2 requires certain branchpipes in parts 2 and 4, when fitted with non-rotating operating elements in line with the hose axis, to have a 360° full-time swivelling inlet device. This matters because it reduces hose twist and helps the operator handle the branchpipe more easily.
Clause 6.2.3 requires operating and handling elements to give a firm hold and withstand mechanical forces. It also requires controlled opening and closing to reduce water hammer, and rotating operating elements must move from wide spray jet to narrow spray jet to straight jet, and from highest to lowest flow, clockwise when viewed from the rear.
Materials, flushing and debris passage
Clause 6.3 requires materials that allow the branchpipe to satisfy all Clause 6 requirements and the heat, frost, and drop tests. In practice, material choice is judged by performance, not by material name alone.
Clause 6.4 requires the branchpipe to pass debris of the size stated in Table 1 without shutting off. A flush feature, where provided, must have a mechanical or visual indication when it is engaged. This matters because crews need to clear debris without losing control of the branchpipe.
Heat, frost, and drop resistance
Clauses 6.5.2 and 6.5.3 require the branchpipe to remain usable after heat exposure and after a frost sequence. The heat test stores the branchpipe for 24 h at +55 °C, and the frost test includes operation, draining, storage at -15 °C, and then a check that the operating elements can still be moved by hand.
Clause 6.6 defines three drop tests. One checks the closed branchpipe dropped onto concrete, one checks a hose-attached branchpipe dropped twice onto concrete, and one repeats the hose drop with the line charged at 6 bar while ensuring the branchpipe does not open. The practical point is that the branchpipe must survive impact in realistic handling and use conditions.
Classification, designation, and user information
Clause 5 requires classification in accordance with Annex A and reminds the user to consider reaction forces before choosing and operating the branchpipe. Clause 7 defines the designation format using the equipment name, the relevant EN 15182 part, and the Annex A classification.
Clause 8 requires each branchpipe to be delivered with an instruction and maintenance handbook. The handbook must include manufacturer details, the Annex C datasheet, warnings, general use information, maintenance instructions, a sectional or exploded diagram, and a spare-parts list. Clause 8.2 also requires visible, legible, and indelible marking of the key identification and operating data.
What terms does oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026 define?
- Branchpipe - the combination of components that connects to a liquid extinguishing agent supply through a hose and coupling and projects the agent as required by the operator.
- Closed branchpipe - a branchpipe with the main shut off valve in the closed position.
- Main shut off valve - the first valve in the flow line.
- Open branchpipe - a branchpipe with all valves fully open.
- Nozzle - the component that controls flow rate and/or spray pattern.
- Reference pressure - the standard working pressure used for hydraulic tests; the document states that pressures in bar are measured at the inlet of the branchpipe.
- Nominal pressure (pN) - the maximum working pressure.
- Flush - the position that allows the branchpipe to clear debris.
Who uses oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026?
oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026 is used by manufacturers of fire service branchpipes, by test laboratories, and by buyers or specifiers who need a common basis for procurement. Annex B also makes clear that customers, independent or national testing organizations, and other third parties may use the acceptance guidance on delivery.
Fire and rescue services use it when selecting equipment, checking documentation, and training operators. Maintenance teams use the handbook, marking, and datasheet requirements to identify the correct branchpipe and service it correctly.
What changed in oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026 from the previous edition?
oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026 will supersede EN 15182-1:2019. The foreword lists these significant changes:
- the first part of the title has been changed;
- the scope wording has been updated, including the exclusions;
- definitions 3.6.1 and 3.6.2 have been updated;
- definition 3.6.4 has been deleted because the term is no longer used;
- Clause 4 has been updated;
- Clause 6.1 has been updated and given a warning;
- Clauses 6.2.2 and 6.2.3 have been updated;
- Clause 6.5.1 no longer lists pressures that were not useful in this part;
- Clauses 6.5.2 and 6.5.3 now require hand protection;
- Clause 8.2 has been updated;
- Annex A Figure A.1 has been updated.
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026?
The normative references named in oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026 are the companion parts of the EN 15182 series:
- EN 15182-2 - combination branchpipes PN 16, used where the common requirements are followed by the specific requirements for that branchpipe type.
- EN 15182-3 - smooth bore jet and/or one fixed spray jet angle branchpipes PN 16.
- EN 15182-4 - high pressure branchpipes PN 40.
The document also cites EN 659 in its operating and test-handling requirements for firefighter's gloves. That reference matters because the branchpipe has to be usable by a gloved operator during verification and normal use.
What does the oSIST prEN 15182-1:2026 document contain?
The document contains the structural and test elements needed to specify and verify hand-held branchpipes. Figure 1 names the main components of a branchpipe, while Figures 2 to 4 show the three drop-test arrangements.
Annex A provides the classification scheme, and Annex C provides the datasheet template used to record product data, flow-pressure charts, operating devices, and test results. Annex C also includes the symbols for spray types and the chart formats used for type 1 and types 2 to 4 branchpipes.
Table 1 gives the debris-passage requirement for flushing, and Annex D shows a completed datasheet example. Together, these parts support design, type testing, acceptance checks, and the technical documentation that accompanies the branchpipe.

Introduction
This document has been created to provide a minimum level of safety and performance criteria.
Its purpose is not to define a specific branchpipe design but to help the user in understanding and
choosing the correct equipment.
The Working Group in charge of this document has thoroughly addressed and discussed the issue of
electrical safety in relation to using water branchpipes. However, an electrical test is not incorporated
into this document as international experience, as well as research (NFPA handbook, French research,
etc) have shown that any “artificial” or “laboratory style” testing will not take into account poor
visibility and other conditions present on any fire ground, nor the problem of estimating distances
under these conditions. When fighting fires in or near electrical installations, the power is cut off as
soon as possible (see the operating instructions, 8.1). Also, it is best practice to maintain a maximum
possible safety distance (at least 1 m up to 1 000 V) and to use a spray jet with a minimum spray angle
of 30 °.
