Overview

EN 12311-2:2013 - Flexible sheets for waterproofing: Determination of tensile properties - Part 2 covers standardized laboratory methods to determine the tensile properties of plastic and rubber sheets for roof waterproofing. Published by CEN, this European Standard is used to characterise products as supplied (before installation). It replaces EN 12311-2:2010 and is intended for product specification, quality control and comparison across manufacturers.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to plastic and elastomeric roof waterproofing sheets; not to installed membrane systems.
  • Test principle: Uniform grip-separation at a constant speed until rupture; continuous recording of force and elongation.
  • Specimen preparation:
    • Two sets of specimens (5 each) for longitudinal and transverse directions unless otherwise specified.
    • Methods: Method A (rectangular 50 × 200 mm) and Method B (dumb-bell 6 × 115 mm or rectangular 15 × 170 mm).
    • Cut specimens ≥ (100 ± 10) mm from sheet edges; remove non‑permanent surface layers.
    • Conditioning: (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH for at least 20 h.
  • Apparatus & parameters:
    • Tensile testing machine with continuous recording, minimum 2 000 N capacity.
    • Grip separation speeds: (5 ± 1), (100 ± 10) and (500 ± 50) mm/min depending on test objective (e.g., Young’s/ secant modulus, general tensile, or high-elongation products).
    • Grip slip limits: ≤ 1 mm (≤ 3 mm thick products) or ≤ 2 mm (thicker). Use an extensometer when slip exceeds limits.
    • Force-measuring system accuracy: at least Class 2 per EN ISO 7500-1 (±2 %).
  • Measured results:
    • Maximum tensile force, elongation at maximum force, elongation at break.
    • Reported as N/50 mm (Method A) or N/mm² (Method B, based on effective thickness per EN 1849-2).
    • Precision data from a Round Robin (nine labs) are given (e.g., general mean max tensile force ≈ 1 224 N/50 mm; reproducibility R = 170).
  • Test report: Must reference EN 12311-2 and include sampling details (EN 13416), specimen prep, test speeds, grip distance, and individual values.

Applications and users

  • Product manufacturers and quality control labs for roof waterproofing membranes
  • Specifiers, testing laboratories and certification bodies assessing tensile strength, elongation and modulus
  • R&D teams comparing formulations (PVC, TPO, EPDM, etc.) or reinforcement types
  • Procurement and compliance teams requiring harmonized product performance data

Related standards

  • EN 1849-2 (thickness / mass per unit area)
  • EN 13416 (sampling rules)
  • EN ISO 7500-1 (calibration of testing machines)
  • EN 1548, EN 1847 (related exposure/characterisation methods)

Keywords: EN 12311-2:2013, tensile properties, flexible sheets for waterproofing, plastic and rubber sheets, roof waterproofing, tensile test, Method A, Method B, tensile stress, elongation.
