kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026 is a SIST draft European standard for the safety of electric deep fat fryers, frying pans, woks and similar oil-cooking appliances for household and similar use. It specifies particular safety requirements for appliances rated up to 250 V, with a focus on marking, temperatures, moisture resistance, abnormal operation and construction. Manufacturers, test laboratories, certification bodies and buyers use it to judge whether a cooking appliance belongs in this product family.
What does kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026 specify?
kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026 specifies the safety requirements for household and similar electric appliances that cook with oil, including deep fat fryers, frying pans and woks. It is a Part 2 standard, so it works together with the general safety requirements of Part 1 and then adds, replaces or modifies the clauses needed for this appliance type.
The scope covers appliances for normal household use and also for similar use by laymen in shops, light industry and farms. It is aimed at products that may be used in domestic kitchens, shared kitchens or other non-specialist settings where the same basic hazards still apply.
The document excludes commercial deep fat fryers, commercial multi-purpose cooking pans, appliances for corrosive or explosive atmospheres, and battery-operated appliances. In practice, that means a product intended for professional food service or for unusual surroundings needs a different standard.
The document is organized in the usual IEC structure:
- clauses 1 to 32 cover the general and particular safety topics;
- clause 3 gives the key operating conditions and a defined term used in the tests;
- clause 7 covers marking and instructions;
- clause 11 and Table 101 cover heating and temperature-rise checks;
- clause 15 covers moisture resistance;
- clause 19 covers abnormal operation;
- clauses 22, 24, 25 and 29 cover construction details;
- Annex B of Part 1 is identified as not applicable here.
What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026?
Scope, product selection and test basis
kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026 sets the product family first, because the safety tests depend on whether the appliance is treated as a deep fat fryer, frying pan or similar appliance. Clause 5.101 is especially important for borderline designs: if a deep fat fryer can also be used as a frying pan, it is tested in the more severe way.
This matters because the same appliance can create different hazards depending on how oil is used and how the heating parts sit in the container. The standard therefore pushes the manufacturer to identify the worst-case operating condition, not just the intended marketing description.
Marking and instructions
Clause 7 requires clear marking for oil level limits and hot surfaces where relevant. Deep fat fryers need maximum oil level marking and, unless they can also be used as frying pans, minimum oil level marking as well. Where external accessible surfaces can become hot, the appliance must carry a hot-surface warning symbol or an equivalent caution statement.
The instructions have to tell the user how to clean food- or oil-contact surfaces, how to handle appliances intended for immersion cleaning, and that some appliances must not be immersed. They also have to warn against use with an external timer or separate remote-control system, and they must include the normal household and similar applications for which the appliance is intended. In practice, this is the information that helps a user avoid the most common misuse cases.
Heating, temperature rise and surface access
Clause 11 is central to the standard because it checks how hot the appliance gets in normal use. The document gives special operating conditions for deep fat fryers, frying pans and woks, and it adds a dedicated probe in Figure 101 for measuring the temperature rise of external accessible surfaces. Table 101 then sets the allowed temperature-rise limits for those surfaces.
This matters because users can touch handles, lids, housings and other surfaces during cooking and cool-down. The standard also requires that the oil temperature and hot accessible parts stay within the permitted limits under normal operation and under a repeat test after cooling.
Moisture resistance and immersion cleaning
Clause 15.101 covers appliances intended to be partially or completely immersed in water for cleaning. The test sequence includes operation, immersion in saline water, drying, leakage-current checks and dielectric-strength checks, followed by inspection for liquid ingress that could reduce insulation spacing.
This is important for products that are cleaned aggressively or have detachable parts. It checks not only whether the appliance still works, but whether water has reached insulation or other internal parts where it could create an electric shock or fire risk later.
Abnormal operation and construction
Clause 19 adds abnormal-operation tests for deep fat fryers with capillary thermal cut-outs and for appliances with detachable heating elements. Frying pans are treated differently from deep fat fryers in these tests, which reflects their different oil conditions and heating arrangements.
Clauses 22, 24, 25 and 29 then deal with practical construction issues: handle strength, connector design, thermal controls in connectors, cord type, and insulation spacing. These clauses matter for durability and safe handling because they check whether the appliance stays secure, whether connectors behave safely, and whether heat and pollution can damage insulation over time.
What terms does kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026 define?
- Functional surface - a surface intentionally heated by an internal heat source and meant to be hot so the appliance can do its intended job.
- Part 1 - the general safety standard, IEC 60335-1, that this Part 2 supplements and modifies.
- IEC - the International Electrotechnical Commission, which publishes the international base standard used here.
- CENELEC - the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, which publishes the European draft and its national adoption process.
- TC 61 - the IEC technical committee for safety of household and similar electrical appliances.
- Appliance connector - the detachable connector used with some appliances for power and, in some designs, temperature control functions.
- Appliance inlet - the inlet on the appliance that mates with the connector, used in the document’s cleaning and test provisions.
Who uses kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026?
kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026 is used by appliance designers, safety engineers, compliance teams, test laboratories, certification bodies and quality managers. It is also relevant to importers, distributors and buyers who need to specify safe household cooking appliances.
In practice, manufacturers use it when designing heaters, oil containers, lids, handles, connectors and markings. Test labs use it to run the heating, immersion, abnormal-operation and construction checks. Buyers and technical purchasers use it to distinguish household-and-similar products from commercial equipment.
What changed in kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026 from the previous edition?
kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026 is based on IEC 60335-2-13:2021 and the European draft states that it will supersede EN 60335-2-13:2010 and its amendments. The IEC edition itself cancels and replaces the sixth edition and Amendment 1:2016.
The significant technical changes stated in the document are:
- alignment with IEC 60335-1:2020;
- conversion of some notes into normative text;
- exclusion of battery-operated appliances;
- an additional test limiting the temperature rise of external accessible surfaces, including hot-surface marking.

INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this International Standard that the execution of its
provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.
Guidance documents concerning the application of the safety requirements for appliances can
be accessed via TC 61 supporting documents on the IEC website
https://www.iec.ch/tc61/supportingdocuments
This information is given for the convenience of users of this International Standard and does
not constitute a replacement for the normative text in this standard.
This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such
as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in normal
use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal situations that
can be expected in practice and takes into account the way in which electromagnetic
phenomena can affect the safe operation of appliances.
This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that there
is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply mains.
However, national wiring rules may differ.
If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered
by another Part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant Part 2 is applied to each function separately, as
far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
When a Part 2 standard does not include additional requirements to cover hazards dealt with
