Appliance couplers for household and similar general purposes - Part 1: General requirements (IEC 60320-1:2021)

This part of lEC 60320 sets the general requirements for appliance couplers for two poles and
two poles with earth contact and for the connection of electrical devices for household and
similar onto the mains supply.
This document is also valid for appliance inlets/appliance outlets integrated or incorporated in
appliances.
The rated voltage does not exceed 250 V (AC) and the rated current does not exceed 16 A.
Appliance couplers complying with this document are suitable for normal use at ambient
temperatures not normally exceeding +40 °C, but their average over a period of 24 h does not
exceed +35 °C, with a lower limit of the ambient air temperature of −5 °C.
Annex E provides test requirements for derating the operating current of an accessory when
used in ambient temperatures above +35 °C up to and including +90 °C.
Appliance couplers are not suitable for:
– use in place of plug and socket-outlet systems according to IEC 60884-1;
– use in place of devices for connecting luminaires (DCLs) according to IEC 61995 or
luminaire supporting couplers (LSCs);
– use in place of installation couplers according to IEC 61535.

– uporabo namesto vtičnih naprav v skladu s standardom IEC 60884-1;
– uporabo namesto naprav za priključitev svetilk (DCL) v skladu s standardom IEC 61995 ali spojk za podporo svetilk (LSC).
OPOMBA: Zahteve za enosmerni tok so v obravnavi.

Relationship between this European standard and the safety
objectives of Directive 2014/35/EU [2014 OJ L96] aimed to be
covered
This European standard has been prepared under a Commission’s standardisation request relating to
harmonised standards in the field of the Low Voltage Directive, M/511, to provide one voluntary means
of conforming to safety objectives of Directive 2014/35/EU of the European Parliament and of the
Council of 26 February 2014 on the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States relating to the
making available on the market of electrical equipment designed for use within certain voltage limits
[2014 OJ L96].
Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union under that Directive,
compliance with the normative clauses of this standard given in Table ZZ.1 confers, within the limits of
the scope of this standard, a presumption of conformity with the corresponding safety objectives of
that Directive, and associated EFTA regulations.

205 AND SIMILAR GENERAL PURPOSES –

207 Part 1: General requirements

209 FOREWORD
210 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
211 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
212 international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
213 this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
214 Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
215 Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
216 in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
217 governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
218 with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
219 agreement between the two organizations.
220 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
221 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
222 interested IEC National Committees.
223 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
224 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
225 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
226 misinterpretation by any end user.
227 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
228 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
229 between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
230 the latter.
231 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
232 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
233 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
234 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
235 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
236 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
237 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees
