Overview

EN 3866:2013 (CEN) defines a qualitative shadowgraph method for the detection of ream and surface ripple in glass transparencies used in aircraft applications. The method is intended to reveal optical distortions and surface irregularities by projecting the shadow of the transparent component onto a matt screen using a homogeneous, high-intensity point light source. This standard is part of the EN aerospace series for non-metallic materials and was prepared under ASD-STAN.

Key Topics

  • Principle: A high-intensity point light source illuminates the glass transparency; distortions are visualised as deviations in the shadow cast on a matt white screen (shadowgraph technique).
  • Apparatus and environment: A dark room; a high-intensity point light source (200 W to 250 W) capable of creating a homogeneous field; and a matt white screen for shadow observation.
  • Typical test geometry (as specified):
    • Glass transparency held parallel to the matt white screen at a distance of 1 000 mm.
    • Light source positioned approximately 3 000 mm from the transparency to produce clear shadows on the screen.
    • The transparency may be slightly angled to confirm whether an observed defect is real or an optical artefact.
  • Nature of results: The method is qualitative only. No numerical acceptance criteria are defined in the standard; it reveals the presence and character of ripple or ream defects rather than quantifying them.
  • Limitations: Measurement precision is not established because inter-laboratory data are not available. Users should not infer quantitative tolerances from the test.
  • Test samples: The test is intended for actual plies / production transparencies rather than laboratory specimens.
  • Reporting and traceability: The test report should reference the method, describe apparatus used, identify the product under test, record any deviations or incidents, and provide traceability to equipment and personnel.

Applications

  • Manufacturing quality control: Final inspection of aircraft windows, canopies and other glass transparencies for visible ripple or ream defects.
  • Acceptance checks: Visual verification during production or prior to assembly where optical clarity and distortion avoidance are critical.
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting: Rapid qualitative assessment of in-service transparencies when optical anomalies are reported.

Note: Because EN 3866:2013 is qualitative, manufacturers and maintenance organisations should combine shadowgraph inspection with other techniques or supplier specifications if quantitative acceptance criteria are required.

This standard was prepared under the ASD-STAN process and approved by CEN; users should consult national implementations and document test reports in accordance with the reporting requirements listed in EN 3866:2013.
