It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods to which it refers.
The ISO 16486 series is applicable to PA-U piping systems, the components of which are connected by fusion jointing and/or mechanical jointing.
In particular, this document lays down dimensional characteristics and requirements for the marking of pipes.
Pipes conforming to this document are jointed typically by using mechanical, electrofusion or butt fusion techniques.

Dieses Dokument legt die physikalischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften von Rohren fest, die nach ISO 16486 1 aus weichmacherfreiem Polyamid (PA U) hergestellt und dafür vorgesehen sind, unterirdisch verlegt und für die Gasversorgung verwendet zu werden.
Es legt auch die Prüfparameter für die Prüfverfahren fest, auf die es sich bezieht.
Die Normenreihe ISO 16486 ist anwendbar für PA U Rohrleitungssysteme, deren Komponenten durch Schweißverbindungen und/oder mechanische Verbindungen zusammengefügt werden.
Dieses Dokument legt insbesondere Maßeigenschaften und Anforderungen an die Kennzeichnung von Rohren fest.

Le présent document spécifie les propriétés physiques et mécaniques des tubes en polyamide non plastifié (PA-U) conformément à l’ISO 16486-1, destinés à être enterrés et utilisés pour la distribution de combustibles gazeux.

This document specifies the characteristics of valves made from unplasticized polyamide (PA-U) in accordance with ISO 16486-1, intended to be buried and used for the supply of gaseous fuels.
NOTE 1        For the purpose of this document the term gaseous fuels include for example natural gas, methane, butane, propane, hydrogen, manufactured gas, biogas, and mixtures of these gases. Additional information about the suitability for 100 % hydrogen and its admixtures with natural gas is given by ISO 16486-1:2023, Annex C and Annex D.
It is applicable to isolating unidirectional and bi-directional valves with spigot ends or electrofusion sockets intended to be fused with PA-U pipes conforming to ISO 16486-2 and PA-U fittings conforming to ISO 16486-3.
This document also specifies the test parameters for the test methods it describes.
In conjunction with ISO 16486-1, ISO 16486-2, ISO 16486-3 and ISO 16486-5, this document is applicable to PA-U valves and their joints and to joints with components of PA-U and other materials intended to be used under the following conditions:
a)       a maximum operating pressure (MOP) of up to and including 18 bar1), or limited to 16 bar under regional CEN requirements, at a reference temperature of 20 °C for design purposes;
NOTE 2        For the purpose of this document and the references to ISO 8233, MOP is considered to be nominal pressure.
b)       an operating temperature of −20 °C to 40 °C;

This document gives guidance and requirements for the assessment of conformity of compounds, products, joints and assemblies in accordance with the applicable part(s) of the ISO 16486 series which are intended to be included in the manufacturer’s quality plan as part of the quality management system and for the establishment of certification procedures.
NOTE 1    A basic test matrix in Annex B provides an overview of the testing scheme.
It is recommended for the manufacturer to have a management system such as ISO 9001[4] or equivalent.
NOTE 2    If certification is involved, certification bodies and inspection bodies operating according to ISO/IEC 17065 and ISO/IEC 17020 are considered to be competent.
In conjunction with the other parts of the ISO 16486 series (see Clause 2), this document is applicable to unplasticized polyamide (PA-U) piping systems intended to be buried and used for the supply of gaseous fuels. It is applicable to PA-U pipes, fittings and valves, as well as to their joints and to joints with components of other materials intended to be used under the following conditions:
a)    a maximum operating pressure (MOP) up to and including 18 bar[1] (the MOP is limited to 16 bar for CEN member countries, where ISO 16486-6 is replaced by CEN/TS 12007-6[1]);
b)    an operating temperature of 20 °C as the reference temperature.
NOTE 3    For operating temperatures different to 20 °C, derating coefficients can be used (see ISO 16486-6). CEN member countries use CEN/TS 12007-6[1] and ISO/TS 16486-7 (this document) as a basis, but they can also request additional requirements. For non-CEN member countries, information for dealing with special cases for PA-U can be found in ISO/TS 16486-7 (this document) and PPI TR-3.[7]
For mechanical fittings conforming to ISO 17885, guidance for assessment of conformity is not given in this document. When requested, a quality plan based on the tests mentioned can be set up in agreement between user and manufacturer.
The ISO 16486 series covers a range of maximum operating pressures and gives requirements concerning colours.
NOTE 4    It is the responsibility of the purchaser or specifier to make the appropriate selections from these aspects, taking into account their particular requirements and any relevant national regulations and installation practices or codes.
[1] 1 bar = 0,1 MPa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2.

It is applicable to polyethylene (PE) pipes, fittings and assemblies, as manufactured and as installed. It is not applicable to the existing pipeline.
It is applicable to technique families for renovation:
— lining with continuous pipes;
— lining with close-fit pipes;
and technique families for trenchless replacement:
— pipe bursting and pipe extraction;
— horizontal directional drilling and impact moling.
This document is applicable to:
— PE solid wall single layered pipes (nominal outside diameter, dn), including any identification stripes;
— PE pipes with co-extruded layers on either or both the outside and inside of the pipe (total outside diameter, dn), as specified in Annex D, where all layers have the same MRS rating.
Furthermore, when used with lining with continuous pipes and trenchless replacement this document is applicable to:
— PE coated pipes (outside diameter, dn) having a peelable, contiguous, thermoplastics additional layer on the outside of the pipe (“coated pipe”), as specified in Annex D.
When used with lining with close-fit lining pipes, the lining pipe is reduced in the factory or on site to provide a close-fitting independent or interactive pressure pipe liner.
This document is applicable to jointing by means of butt fusion and electrofusion and to fabricated and injection-moulded fittings and mechanical connections of PE.
This document is not applicable to push-fit jointed discrete pipes assembled as part of the trenchless installation process.
