This part of ISO 16486 specifies the requirements of fitness for purpose of the unplasticized polyamide (PA-U) piping system, intended to be buried and used for the supply of gaseous fuels. It also specifies the definitions of electrofusion and butt fusion joints.
This part of ISO 16486 specifies the method of preparation of test piece joints and the tests to be carried out on these joints for assessing the fitness for purpose of the system under normal and extreme conditions. It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods to which it refers.
ISO 16486 is applicable to PA-U piping systems the components of which are connected by fusion jointing and/or mechanical jointing.
In conjunction with the other parts of ISO 16486, it is applicable to PA-U fittings, their joints and to joints with components of PA-U.

Dieses Dokument legt die Anforderungen an die Gebrauchstauglichkeit von Rohrleitungssystemen aus weichmacherfreiem Polyamid (PA-U) fest, die unterirdisch verlegt und für die Gasversorgung verwendet werden sollen. Es legt auch die Definitionen von Heizwendel- und Stumpfschweißverbindungen fest.
Dieses Dokument legt das Herstellungsverfahren für Probekörperverbindungen und die an diesen Verbindungen vorzunehmenden Prüfungen fest, um die Gebrauchstauglichkeit des Systems unter normalen und unter extremen Bedingungen zu bewerten. Es legt darüber hinaus die Prüfparameter für die Prüfverfahren fest, auf die es sich bezieht.
Die Normenreihe ISO 16486 gilt für PA-U-Rohrleitungssysteme, deren Komponenten durch Schweißverbin-dungen und/oder mechanische Verbindungen zusammengefügt werden.

Le présent document spécifie la méthode de préparation des assemblages d’éprouvettes, ainsi que les essais à réaliser sur ces assemblages pour évaluer l’aptitude à l’emploi du système dans des conditions normales et extrêmes. Elle spécifie également les paramètres d’essai pour les méthodes d’essai auxquelles il est fait référence.
La série ISO 16486 s’applique aux systèmes de canalisations en PA-U dont les composants sont raccordés par des assemblages par soudage et/ou par des assemblages mécaniques.

"Plastics pipes, fittings and valves for the transport of fluids" in collaboration with Technical Committee
CEN/TC 155 “Plastics piping systems and ducting systems” the secretariat of which is held by NEN.

for the transport of fluids, Subcommittee SC 4, Plastics pipes and fittings for the supply of gaseous fuels,
in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/
TC 155, Plastics piping systems and ducting systems, in accordance with the Agreement on technical
cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 16486-5:2012), which has been
technically revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— for transition fittings, reference is made to ISO 17885;
— new Clause 5, Design Coefficient, has been added;
— Annex A refers to ISO 11414 for test piece assemblies by butt fusion and has been brought in line
with ISO 12176-1 for butt fusion equipment.
— Annex A has been brought in line with ISO 21307, with a definition of PA fusion parameters for
the single low-pressure and the single high-pressure butt fusion jointing procedures (the dual low-
pressure procedure is not investigated for PA-U so far);
— in Table A.2 for the single low-pressure butt fusion procedure, the pressure, p , has been changed

from (0,3 ± 0,1) MPa to (0,3 ± 0,05) MPa to raise the minimum pressure from 0,2 MPa to 0,25 MPa;
— Annex B refers to ISO 11413 for test piece assemblies by electro fusion and to ISO 12176-2 for electro
fusion equipment;
— Annex C of ISO 16486-5:2012, Assessment of fitness for purpose of transition fittings, has been
deleted;
— new Annex C, Derating coefficients for operating temperatures, has been transferred from
ISO 16486-6;

Introduction
This document specifies the requirements for a piping system and its components made from
unplasticized polyamide (PA-U), which is intended to be used for the supply of gaseous fuels.
Requirements and test methods for material and components of the piping system are specified in
ISO 16486-1, ISO 16486-2, ISO 16486-3, and ISO 16486-4.
This document covers the characteristics for fitness for purpose of the system.
Recommended practice for installation is given in ISO 16486-6, which will not be implemented as
European Standard under the Vienna Agreement.
NOTE Recommended practice for installation is also given in CEN/TS 12007-6, which has been prepared
by Technical Committee CEN/TC 234, Gas infrastructure.

1 Scope
This document specifies the requirements of fitness for purpose of unplasticized polyamide (PA-
U) piping system, intended to be buried and used for the supply of gaseous fuels. It also specifies the

the transport of fluids, Subcommittee SC 4, Plastics pipes and fittings for the supply of gaseous fuels.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 16486-5:2012), which has been
technically revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— For transition fittings, reference is made to ISO 17885;
— New chapter 5 design coefficient is added;
— Normative Annex A refers to ISO 11414 for test piece assemblies by butt fusion and is brought in line
with ISO 12176-1 for butt fusion equipment
— Normative Annex A is brought in line with ISO 21307, with definition of PA fusion parameters for
the single low-pressure and the single high pressure butt fusion jointing procedures (the dual low-
pressure procedure is not investigated so far for PA-U);
— In Table A.2 for the single low pressure butt fusion procedure, the pressure p is changed from 0,3

Parts 1, 2. 3, 5 (this document), and 6 have been prepared by ISO/TC138/SC4, and a future part
7: Assessment of conformity is under preparation. Part 4 has been prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC138/SC 7 Valves and auxiliary equipment of plastics materials.
Part 6 will not be implemented as European Standard under the Vienna Agreement.
NOTE Future CEN/TS 12007-x, Gas infrastructure — Pipelines for maximum operating pressure up to and
including 16 bar — Part x: Design, handling, installation and operation of unplasticized polyamide (PA-U) piping
systems with fusion joining and mechanical jointing - Functional recommendation, to be prepared by Technical
Committee CEN/TC234 Gas infrastructure will deal with the recommended practice for installation of plastics

Introduction
This part of ISO 16486 specifies the requirements for a piping system and its components made from
unplasticized polyamide (PA-U), and which is intended to be used for the supply of gaseous fuels.
Requirements and test methods for material and components of the piping system are specified in
ISO 16486-1, ISO 16486-2, ISO 16486-3, and ISO 16486-4.
This part 5 of ISO 16486 covers the characteristics for fitness for purpose of the system.

Recommended practice for installation is given in ISO 16486-6 . ISO 16486-6 will not be implemented
as European Standard under the Vienna Agreement. Recommended practice for installation will be
given in future CEN/TS 12007-x, Gas infrastructure — Pipelines for maximum operating pressure up to
and including 16 bar — Part x: Design, handling, installation and operation of unplasticized polyamide (PA-

1 Scope
This part of ISO 16486 specifies the requirements of fitness for purpose of the unplasticized polyamide
(PA-U) piping system, intended to be buried and used for the supply of gaseous fuels. It also specifies
the definitions of electrofusion and butt fusion joints.
This part of ISO 16486 specifies the method of preparation of test piece joints and the tests to be carried
out on these joints for assessing the fitness for purpose of the system under normal and extreme
conditions. It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods to which it refers.
ISO 16486 is applicable to PA-U piping systems the components of which are connected by fusion
jointing and/or mechanical jointing.
In conjunction with the other parts of ISO 16486, it is applicable to PA-U fittings, their joints and to
joints with components of PA-U.

joint between a PA-U electrofusion socket or saddle fitting and a pipe or a spigot end fitting
Note 1 to entry: The electrofusion fittings are heated by the Joule effect of the heating element incorporated at
their jointing surfaces, causing the material adjacent to them to melt and the pipe and fitting surfaces to fuse.

transition fitting
Factory made fitting that makes a transition joint between a unplasticized polyamide (PA-U) piping and
a metallic pipe as described in ISO 16486-3.
Note 1 to entry: The metallic parts of the fitting may be assembled to metallic pipes by screw threads, compression
joints, welded or flanged connections. The fitting can allow for either a dismountable or permanently assembled
joint. In some cases, the supporting ring may also act as a grip ring.

4 Fitness for purpose
4.1 Method of preparation of assemblies for testing
4.1.1 General
The joints shall be made by using pipes conforming to ISO 16486-2 and/or fittings conforming to
ISO 16486-3.
Test pieces for pressure test shall be closed with pressure-tight, end-load-bearing end caps, plugs or
flanges, which shall be provided with connections for the entry of water and release of air.
4.1.2 Butt fusion joints
PA-U pipes and spigot end fittings intended to be used for jointing by butt fusion shall be prepared and
assembled in accordance with Annex A.
4.1.3 Electrofusion jointing
PA-U pipes and fittings intended to be used for jointing by electrofusion shall be prepared and assembled
in accordance with Annex B.

For joints with electrofusion socket fittings and joints with electrofusion saddle fittings, test joints
shall be prepared to check the fitness for purpose of the fittings under extreme jointing conditions.
For joints with electrofusion saddle fittings, the electrofusion saddle fitting shall be fused to the pipe,
while it is pneumatically pressurized to the allowable maximum operating pressure. The pipe shall be
cut immediately after the manufacturer-prescribed cooling time has elapsed.
These joints with electrofusion saddle fitting should be prepared taking national safety regulations
into consideration.
For straight equal electrofusion socket fittings (couplers), test joints on selected diameters out of the
product range shall be prepared with a gap of 0,05d between the pipe end and the maximum theoretical
n
depth of penetration of the fitting, where for diameters greater than 225 mm, the adjoining pipes shall
be arranged to provide the maximum angular deflection possible for the fitting, limited to 1,5°.
4.1.4 Transition fittings
For transition fittings, the assembly of PA pipe and fitting shall be prepared in accordance with
ISO17885 as applicable.
The metallic part of this fitting can be assembled to a metallic pipe by screw threads, compression
joints, welded or brazed flanges or by other means.
4.2 Requirements for fitness for purpose
4.2.1 Fitness for purpose for butt fusion joints
4.2.1.1 Under normal conditions — Ambient temperature 23 °C
For the assessment of fitness for purpose under normal conditions, butt fusion joints shall have the
characteristic of tensile strength conforming to the requirement given in Table 5, using the parameters
as specified in Annex A, Table A.2 and Table A.3, at an ambient temperature of (23 ± 2) °C and the
scheme listed in Table 1.
