Overview

EN 12369-3:2022 - "Wood‑based panels - Characteristic values for structural design - Part 3: Solid wood panels" (CEN) defines the characteristic mechanical properties and raw density values to be used when designing structures that incorporate solid wood panels (SWP) complying with EN 13353:2022. The values are given in the format required by EN 1995‑1‑1 (Eurocode 5) and are intended as minimum characteristic values for use in structural design.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Characteristic strength, stiffness (modulus of elasticity) and raw density for SWP technical classes SWP/1 S, SWP/2 S, SWP/3 S.
  • Data presentation: Tables provide characteristic densities, strength properties (bending, tension, compression, shear) and mean stiffness values for specified nominal thickness ranges (single‑layer and multi‑layer panels).
  • Stiffness convention: Mean stiffness values are listed; the 5‑percentile stiffness used in design should be taken as 0.85 × mean stiffness.
  • Modification factors: Values must be adjusted for service class and load duration using modification factors (k_mod, k_def) in EN 1995‑1‑1:
    • Single‑layer SWP: apply solid wood modification factors.
    • Multi‑layer SWP: apply plywood modification factors.
    • Chemically/thermally treated wood: EN 1995‑1‑1 factors cannot be used - use testing per EN 1156 to derive factors.
  • Testing and sampling: Where manufacturers declare values different from the standard tables, values must be determined using EN 1058 sampling and EN 789 test methods.
  • Minimum appearance/class: Panels must meet minimum appearance classes per EN 13017‑1/2 as applicable.

Practical applications and users

  • Structural engineers and designers using Eurocode 5 to model and dimension timber floors, walls, roofs or structural panel systems with solid wood panels.
  • Manufacturers of solid wood panels (SWP) preparing technical datasheets, conformity documentation and performance declarations.
  • Product certifiers, specifiers, building authorities and contractors verifying that panel properties meet design assumptions.
  • Researchers and test laboratories conducting EN 789/EN 1058 testing to produce certified characteristic values.

Related standards

  • EN 1995‑1‑1 (Eurocode 5) - Design rules and modification factors
  • EN 13353:2022 - Solid wood panels requirements
  • EN 789 - Test methods for mechanical properties of wood‑based panels
  • EN 1058 - Determination of characteristic 5‑percentile and mean values
  • EN 1156 - Duration of load and creep factors
  • EN 13017‑1/2 - Surface appearance classification
  • EN 338, EN 13986 - Strength classes and construction product rules

EN 12369-3:2022 provides the standardized characteristic values and the rules to adapt them for service conditions - essential reference for safe, code‑compliant structural design using solid wood panels.
