Overview

EN 13409:2002 is the CEN test method for determining the setting time of hydraulic-setting floor smoothing and/or levelling compounds after mixing. The standard defines a repeatable procedure using a Vicat-type needle to record both initial and final penetration times under controlled laboratory conditions. The method supports quality control, product development and compliance verification for smoothing and levelling compounds.

  • Calibrate the Vicat apparatus and zero the pointer before testing.
  • Mix the compound per EN 1937 and fill the mould immediately.
  • For initial setting time, record when the scale reading reaches (4 ± 1) mm; for final setting time, record when penetration is 0,5 mm.
  • Use reduced test intervals near end points and record times to the nearest minute.

• Expression of results: initial and final setting times are expressed as the elapsed time from the end of mixing to the defined penetration endpoints, rounded to the nearest minute.

• Safety: normal laboratory practice applies. Users must ensure compliance with applicable health and safety regulations.
