Overview
EN 13872:2004 is a CEN test method for measuring the dimensional change (shrinkage or expansion) of hydraulic setting floor smoothing and levelling compounds. The standard defines specimen geometry, measuring apparatus, test atmosphere and storage times to quantify length change of cast specimens and to report results as percent change. It is intended for manufacturers, testing laboratories, specifiers and quality-control personnel in the floor covering and construction-materials sectors.
Key topics & technical requirements
- Scope: Measurement of dimensional change of hydraulic setting smoothing and/or levelling compounds.
- Specimen size: Test specimens cast from moulds of nominal dimensions 10 ± 0.5 mm × 40 ± 0.5 mm × 160 ± 1.0 mm (three specimens minimum).
- Measuring accuracy: Appparatus capable of ±0.005 mm resolution; examples shown for vertical and horizontal measuring set-ups and for various measuring peg shapes (A–D).
- Standard atmosphere: Conditioning and testing at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH in accordance with ISO 554.
- Storage & measurement schedule: Initial measurement after demoulding (1 day), then at 3, 7, 14 and 28 days (storage A). Optional additional 28 days water immersion after the 28‑day dry storage with wet measurements (storage B).
- Result expression: Dimensional change reported as shrinkage (negative) or expansion (positive) in percent relative to the reference length (immediately after demoulding for storage A; immediately prior to immersion for storage B). Results are the arithmetic mean of three specimens, rounded to 0.01 %.
- Test report content: Must include reference to EN 13872, compound designation and batch, mixing method and time (per EN 1937), dimensional change values, any curling/twisting, influencing factors and test date.
Practical applications
- Verify product performance and dimensional stability of floor smoothing and levelling compounds used under floor coverings.
- Support quality control during production and batch verification.
- Provide objective data for product datasheets, technical approvals and comparison between formulations.
- Aid specifiers, flooring contractors and certification bodies in assessing risk of curl, shrinkage or expansion that could affect finishing layers.
Who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of hydraulic setting smoothing/levelling compounds
- Materials testing laboratories and QA departments
- Flooring product specifiers, consultants and certification bodies
- R&D teams optimizing formulation and dimensional stability
