Overview
EN ISO 14451-9:2013 - published by CEN - is the ISO standard that defines requirements and categorization for pyrotechnic actuators used in vehicles. It specifies the sequence and types of type tests to be applied to actuators, the associated acceptance criteria, and how actuators are categorized. This part of ISO 14451 applies to automotive safety pyrotechnic actuators and excludes articles containing military explosives or commercial blasting agents (except black powder or flash composition).
Key topics and technical requirements
Scope and applicability
- Applies to type tests for vehicle pyrotechnic actuators.
- Not applicable to military explosives/commercial blasting agents (with noted exceptions).
Verification of design and documentation
- Complete technical documentation required (referenced to ISO 14451-2).
Mandatory test types
- Drop test - acceptance: no ignition, no spill out of pyrotechnic composition.
- Vibration and temperature test - acceptance: no ignition, no spill out.
- Thermal humidity cycling test - acceptance: no ignition.
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD) test - acceptance: no ignition.
- Fire test - conducted with a heating rate of 80 K/min; acceptance: only foreseeable fragmentation/opening.
- Functioning test - actuator must perform intended fragmentation/opening; for multi-stage devices the inter-stage delay is 5 ms or per product specification.
Test matrix and sequencing
- Clause 5 provides a test matrix summarizing sequences and sample allocation for combined testing.
Categorization
- Criteria for classifying actuators according to test outcomes are defined in Clause 6.
Practical applications and users
This standard is essential for:
- Pyrotechnic actuator manufacturers designing actuators for airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and other vehicle safety systems.
- Automotive OEMs specifying supplier requirements for passive safety components.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing type testing and conformity assessment.
- Regulatory/compliance teams seeking presumption of conformity with EU Directive 2007/23/EC for pyrotechnic articles.
Benefits include consistent safety verification, predictable performance in crash scenarios, and clear acceptance criteria to support product certification and market access.
