Overview
SIST EN 12629-2:2004/kFprA1:2010 specifies safety requirements for machines used in the manufacture of constructional products such as blocks, kerbs, paving stones, and similar items from concrete and calcium-silicate. Prepared by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), in collaboration with CEN/TC 151, this standard outlines additional requirements specific to block making machines, supplementing general provisions found in EN 12629-1. The document supports conformity with essential requirements of the European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and former Directive 98/37/EC, ensuring the safe design, installation, and operation of these machines in the construction equipment sector.
Key Topics
- Safety Requirements: The standard details essential safety measures tailored to block making machines, highlighting the need for protective systems to address significant hazards such as mechanical entrapment, electrical risks, and operational misuse.
- Relevant Hazards: Emphasis is placed on identifying and mitigating all significant hazards encountered during intended use and foreseeable misuse. This aims to minimize risk to operators and maintenance personnel.
- Operational Competence: It is assumed that block making equipment is operated by competent, designated, and specifically trained staff, and that adequate lighting and environmental conditions are maintained at the installation site.
- Harmonization with Legislation: SIST EN 12629-2 aligns safety practices with key EU directives, ensuring manufacturers and users can demonstrate compliance and benefit from presumption of conformity with applicable legal requirements.
- Information and Marking: The standard prescribes the provision of comprehensive operating instructions, clear marking of equipment, and detailed guidance on the arrangement of machines for optimal safety.
Applications
- Block Making Plants: Manufacturers of concrete and calcium-silicate blocks, kerbs, and paving stones deploy these standards to ensure the safety and reliability of their machinery.
- Construction Product Manufacturing: Facilities involved in the automated or semi-automated production of precast concrete elements use this standard to guide the design and operation of their equipment.
- Safety Compliance: Organizations subject to EU machinery directives utilize SIST EN 12629-2 to demonstrate adherence to regional safety expectations and meet market requirements.
- Operational Excellence: By following the standard's guidance, companies enhance workplace safety, reduce downtime from accidents, and improve training protocols for operators.
Related Standards
- EN 12629-1:2000+A1:2010: Common safety requirements for machinery involved in manufacturing constructional products from concrete and calcium silicate.
- EN ISO 12100-1 and EN ISO 12100-2: General principles for designing safe machinery, including terminology, methodology, and technical principles.
- EN ISO 13850: Guidelines for emergency stop functions in machinery.
- EN ISO 13857: Specifies safety distances to prevent access to hazard zones.
- IEC 60204-1: Outlines general requirements for the electrical equipment of machines.
By adhering to SIST EN 12629-2:2004/kFprA1:2010, manufacturers, suppliers, and users of block making equipment in the construction industry support safer working environments, streamlined compliance with European regulations, and improved process reliability in the production of concrete-based products.
