Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide fed-
eration of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0 collabor-
ates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are cir-
culated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 2114 was prepared by Technical Committee

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (IS0 2114:1974),
which has been technically revised (see the introduction for details).

Introduction
This International Standard was developed for unsaturated polyester resins
and specifies the methods that are applicable for the determination of the
acid values: total acid value and partial acid value.
The previous edition determined only the partial acid value, which corre-
sponds to the neutralization of only half of the free anhydride present. In
the case of resins based on maleic anhydrideketrahydrophthalic acid, the
error involved is very small. In the case of resins based on maleic anhy-
dride/orthophthalic acid or maleic anhydrideketrabromophthalic acid, how-
ever, the error is significant.
Hence, this edition includes methods for the dete rmina tion of both partial
s, using the chemical reactions given below:
