Overview
FprEN IEC 60086-2-2:2025 - Primary batteries: Part 2-2: Physical and electrical specifications of lithium batteries specifies the form, fit and electrical performance requirements for standardized non‑aqueous (lithium) primary cells and batteries. Part of the IEC 60086 series, this document provides dimensional drawings, discharge test conditions and pass/fail performance criteria for many common lithium formats (coin/button cells, specialty cylindrical and multi‑cell types). It complements IEC 60086‑1 (general requirements) and is intended for use by battery manufacturers, device designers and test laboratories.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Physical dimensions and symbols: Detailed dimensional drawings and tolerances for multiple categories and individual battery types (e.g., FR10G445, FR14505, CR‑series coin cells, BR variants, 2CR and CR‑P2 formats).
- Battery categories: Organized specifications across Category 1–6 batteries with dedicated figures and tables for each group and many individual part designations.
- Discharge test conditions: Defined test regimes and loads (including updated test loads - e.g., digital audio test load for FR10G445 revised from 50 mA to 75 mA) and criteria for discharge performance and mean discharge (MAD) requirements.
- Electrical limits and voltages: Nominal and open‑circuit voltage definitions and specific limits (notably maximum OCV changes for FR10G445 and FR14505 from 1.83 V to 1.90 V in this edition).
- Dimensional stability and test validity: Rules for verifying dimensional conformity and conditions under which discharge testing is considered valid.
- Annexes and support material: Informative annexes providing tabulation by application, cross‑reference indexes, and a compliance checklist to aid implementation.
Practical applications and who uses it
- Battery manufacturers use the standard to design, specify and label lithium primary cells so they meet internationally recognized form, fit and electrical performance expectations.
- Device and product designers (OEMs) rely on the defined dimensions and performance tests to ensure compatibility and predictable battery behaviour in consumer electronics, portable lighting, toys, key fobs, cameras and sensors.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors apply the discharge procedures and pass/fail criteria for certification, product acceptance testing and quality control.
- Procurement, standards bodies and regulators use the standard to define contract specifications, regulatory references and interoperability requirements.

70 PRIMARY BATTERIES –
72 Part 2-2:
73 Physical and electrical specifications
74 of lithium batteries
76 FOREWORD
77 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
78 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
79 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
80 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
81 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
82 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
83 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
84 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
85 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
86 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
87 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
88 interested IEC National Committees.
89 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
90 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
91 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
92 misinterpretation by any end user.
93 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
94 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
95 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
96 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
97 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
98 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
99 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
100 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
101 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
102 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
103 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
104 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
105 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
106 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
107 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
108 International Standard IEC 60086-2-2 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 35:

145 INTRODUCTION
146 The technical content of this part of IEC 60086 provides physical dimensions, discharge test
147 conditions and discharge performance requirements. IEC 60086-2-1 and IEC 60086-2-2
148 complement the general information and requirements of IEC 60086-1. Safety information of
149 IEC 60086-2-2 is available in IEC 60086-4 and IEC 62281.
150 This part was prepared to benefit primary battery users, device designers and battery
151 manufacturers by furnishing the specifics of form, fit and function for individual standardized
152 primary cells and batteries. Over the years, this part has been changed to improve its contents
153 and may again be revised in due course in the light of comments made by national committees
154 and experts on the basis of practical experience and changing technology.
