The SIST EN 13163:2013+A2:2017 standard delineates the specification requirements for factory-made expanded polystyrene (EPS) products used in the thermal insulation of buildings. Its scope effectively encompasses various forms of EPS, including boards, rolls, and preformed ware such as flat, tapered, tongue and groove, shiplap, and profiled options. This flexibility in product form is a significant strength of the standard, as it accommodates a wide range of applications in thermal insulation, including sound insulation and prefabricated thermal insulation systems. The standard's detailed description of product characteristics, in addition to its comprehensive procedures for testing and evaluating conformity, enhances its relevance in ensuring quality and consistency across EPS products. The emphasis on marking and labeling further aids in product identification and assures users of compliance with safety and performance standards, thereby promoting informed choices in building insulation applications. However, it is clear that the standard does not specify required classes or levels of properties for products, which delegates the responsibility of ensuring suitability to relevant regulations or other non-conflicting standards. This aspect, while emphasizing flexibility, may necessitate additional diligence from manufacturers and users to ensure that the chosen materials meet specific application needs. Importantly, the standard explicitly excludes several types of insulation products, including in-situ insulation, those intended for building equipment insulation, civil engineering applications, and beam and block systems. This clarity judiciously narrows the standard's focus, allowing for deeper exploration and innovation within the scope it covers, while also avoiding overreach into areas addressed by other standards. The exclusion of products with a declared thermal resistance lower than 0.25 m²⋅K/W and a thermal conductivity greater than 0.060 W/(m⋅K) ensures that only suitable materials for effectiveness in thermal insulation are included, aligning with efficiency concerns in modern building practices. Overall, the SIST EN 13163:2013+A2:2017 standard serves as a crucial reference for ensuring the quality and performance of EPS thermal insulation products, making significant contributions to building energy efficiency and acoustic performance. Its comprehensive scope and strong emphasis on product evaluation and labeling reinforce its essential role in the construction industry.
