Overview

EN 60335-2-49:2003/A2:2019 is a CENELEC adoption of IEC 60335-2-49 amendment A2 that defines particular safety requirements for commercial electric appliances for keeping food and crockery warm. The amendment (approved 2019) updates the original Part 2‑49 requirements to clarify definitions, marking, heating tests and temperature‑rise limits, and supports conformity with the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU). Typical scope covers appliances used in restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries and similar commercial settings (but not continuous mass food production).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and classification
    • Applies to commercial appliances intended for keeping food and crockery warm; appliances shall be Class I or Class II.
    • Clarifies that crockery is considered a functional surface (not a surface for temperature-rise measurement).
  • Definitions
    • Introduces terms such as functional surface (intentionally heated surface) and adjacent surface (can become hot by conduction).
  • Marking and instructions
    • Requires visible markings (e.g., IEC 60417‑5041 symbol or the text “CAUTION: Hot surfaces”) for external accessible surfaces that may exceed temperature limits.
    • Symbol triangle height must be at least 15 mm and markings must remain visible in normal operation.
  • Temperature-rise limits and heating tests
    • Defines maximum temperature rises (Table 101) for external accessible surfaces under normal operation, e.g.:
      • Bare metal: 48 K
      • Coated metal: 59 K
      • Glass and ceramic: 65 K
      • Plastic (coating > 0.4 mm): 74 K
    • Allows local exceedance up to 25 K within 100 mm of adjacent surfaces if the area is marked.
    • Measurement method: uses a specified probe (applied with 4 N ± 1 N, 30 s contact) and steady conditions are considered 60 minutes after reaching normal operating temperature.
  • Normative references
    • Adds referenced standards such as IEC 60584‑1 (thermocouples) and ISO fastener standards (ISO 898‑1, ISO 3506 series).

Applications - who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers and product designers of commercial food‑service warmers, bain‑maries, warming cabinets and heated displays - for safe design and compliance.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors - for performing temperature‑rise and safety tests specified in the standard.
  • Compliance engineers and notified bodies - to demonstrate conformity with the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and national implementations.
  • Procurement and facility managers - to specify safe equipment for commercial kitchens, hospitals and canteens.

Related standards

  • EN 60335‑1 (Part 1 general requirements)
  • IEC 60335‑2‑49 (base international standard)
  • IEC 60584‑1; ISO 898‑1; ISO 3506‑1/2/3/4 (referenced normative documents)

This standard is essential when specifying or testing commercial heating/warming appliances to ensure consumer safety, regulatory compliance and clear marking for hot surfaces. Keywords: EN 60335-2-49, commercial electric appliances, keeping food warm, temperature rise limits, IEC 60335-2-49, Low Voltage Directive, hot surfaces marking.
