kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-17:2026/kFprAA:2026 is a SIST draft amendment to the CENELEC safety standard for household and similar electric blankets, pads, clothing and other flexible heating appliances. It applies to appliances used to heat the bed or the human body, with rated voltage not more than 250 V. The amendment is read with prEN IEC 60335-2-17:2024 and the Part 1 general requirements.

What does kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-17:2026/kFprAA:2026 specify?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-17:2026/kFprAA:2026 sets particular safety requirements for flexible heating appliances for household and similar use. It is the Slovene standard identical to prEN IEC 60335-2-17:2024/prAA:2024.

The document is organized as an amendment to the base safety standard. It modifies the introduction, scope, normative references, markings and instructions, heating, construction, resistance to rusting, the annexes and the bibliography. European additions are marked with the prefix “Z”.

AnnexWhat it covers
ZANormative references to international publications and their European publications
ZESpecific additional requirements for appliances and machines intended for commercial use
ZZARelationship with Directive 2014/35/EU
ZZBRelationship with Directive 2006/42/EC
ZZCRelationship with Directive 2014/53/EU

What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-17:2026/kFprAA:2026?

The amendment focuses on user information, remote operation, and how the appliance is checked when remote control features are present. In practice, it tells manufacturers what to state in the instructions and what functions the appliance must provide.

User instructions and warnings

Clause 7.12 adds instructions for safe use by children older than 3 years and younger than 8 years under supervision, with the control set to the minimum temperature value. It also adds warnings for appliances with remote operation, including disconnecting the remote operation function before the appliance contacts the user and not operating the appliance by an external timer or separate remote-control system.

Clause 7.12 also adds a warning about the cable and control unit: they can create entanglement, strangulation, tripping or treading risks if they are not arranged correctly. The user instructions must tell the user to arrange excess ties and electric cords safely. Clause 7.12.1 adds that repairs shall be carried out by competent persons.

Heating test for remote operation

Clause 11.101 adds a heating test condition for appliances with remote operation. The test is repeated with the control units and cord switches set to the highest setting and to the maximum duration of operation that can be set for remote operation. This means the appliance is assessed in its most demanding remote-control setting.

Construction of remote-operated appliances

Clause 22.40 requires a switch that stops the operation of the appliance. The actuating member must be easy to see and reach. Clause 22.49 requires the duration of operation to be set before the appliance can start in remote mode. Clause 22.51 requires a manual setting on the appliance for remote operation and a visual indication that the appliance is set for that mode.

Scope and Part 1 relationship

Clause 1 clarifies that the standard deals with reasonably foreseeable hazards for appliances and machines encountered by all persons, and it notes that people with disabilities can have needs beyond the level addressed. Clause 31 is changed so that resistance to rusting from Part 1 is not applicable.

What terms does kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-17:2026/kFprAA:2026 define?

Remote operation - A mode where the appliance is started or controlled at a distance, which triggers extra instructions, controls and test conditions.

Control unit - The part used to adjust the appliance settings, including the remote-operation setting.

Cord switch - A switch in the cord system that is included in the remote-operation heating test.

Competent persons - People qualified to carry out repairs safely.

Presumption of conformity - The legal effect described in the annexes when the standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) - The directive linked in Annex ZZA, showing how the standard supports the directive’s safety objectives.

Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU) - The directive linked in Annex ZZC for the cases covered there.

Who uses kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-17:2026/kFprAA:2026?

Manufacturers of electric blankets, pads, heated clothing and similar flexible heating appliances use this standard to design products and write instructions. Safety engineers and test laboratories use it to check heating behaviour, remote-operation functions and construction details.

Quality teams, conformity-assessment bodies and buyers use it to compare products, review technical files and understand which safety features and warnings must be present. It is also relevant for organizations working to the linked EU safety objectives in Annex ZZA and Annex ZZC.

What changed in kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-17:2026/kFprAA:2026 from the previous edition?

This amendment supersedes EN 60335-2-17:2013+A1:2020+A2:2021+A11:2019. It supplements or modifies EN IEC 60335-1:2023+A11:2023 and EN IEC 60335-2-17:2024.

The stated changes are:

  • updated wording in the scope
  • added instructions and warnings in Clause 7
  • added a remote-operation heating test in Clause 11
  • revised construction requirements in Clause 22
  • made Part 1’s rusting clause not applicable in Clause 31
  • updated the annexes, including the EU-relationship annexes
  • updated the bibliography
