Overview

EN 13354:2008 specifies a shear test method to determine the bonding quality of single-layer and multi-layer solid wood panels (SWP). The procedure evaluates adhesive performance by subjecting representative test pieces to a defined pre-treatment (dry, humid or exterior service conditions) and loading them to failure in shear. Results quantify shear strength and the apparent cohesive wood failure of the shear area to assess bond integrity.

• Scope and sampling: At least 10 test pieces shall be cut from each multi-layer panel; for single-layer panels at least 10 glue lines are tested. Cutting plans must include pieces from both near the board edge and the centre and test pieces must be free of defects.
• Test-piece geometry: Examples in the standard include:
  • Single-layer: height h = 50 mm, shear width b = 25 mm, saw-cut width sf ≥ 3 mm.
  • Multi-layer: shear length l = 50 mm, height h = 40 mm, shear width b = 10 mm, saw-cut width sf ≥ 3 mm. Saw cuts must be parallel, accurately sawn and penetrate to the glue line.
• Apparatus: Compression testing machine (constant rate or constant cross-head speed, load accuracy better than ±2%), thermostatic water bath (20 ± 3 °C), boiling tank, ventilated drying oven (60 ± 3 °C) and an adjustable shearing tool.
• Pre-treatment: Pre-treatment depends on intended use:
  • Dry: 24 h immersion in water at (20 ± 3) °C.
  • Humid: 6 h boiling in water followed by at least 1 h cooling in water at (20 ± 3) °C.
  • Exterior: sequence of boiling and drying cycles (example: 4 h boiling, 16–20 h drying at 60 ± 3 °C, then 4 h boiling and 1 h cooling at 20 ± 3 °C) as specified for exterior service.
• Testing procedure: Measure shear area dimensions to 0.1 mm accuracy, position the specimen in the shearing tool so the load is parallel to the glue line and apply load so failure occurs within approximately (60 ± 30) s. Record maximum load to the nearest 10 N and assess apparent cohesive wood failure per EN 314-1.
• Calculation: Shear strength fv (N/mm²) for each specimen is calculated as fv = F / (b · l), where F is the maximum load (N), l is shear length (mm) and b is shear width (mm). Mean value and standard deviation are calculated in accordance with EN 326-1.
