Overview
SIST EN ISO 7010:2020/A3:2022 is the third amendment to the European and international standard ISO 7010:2019, titled Graphical symbols - Safety colours and safety signs - Registered safety signs. Published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this amendment introduces critical updates to the standardized safety symbols used across Europe and globally. The standard ensures consistent graphical representations of safety signs to improve hazard communication and enhance workplace and public safety.
This amendment, approved in April 2022, aligns with ISO/TC 145 technical committee efforts focused on graphical symbols and safety identification. The document includes new safety signs that facilitate immediate hazard recognition, aiming to prevent accidents and improve disaster control.
Key Topics
- Standardized safety colours and graphical symbols: EN ISO 7010 provides a set of universally recognized safety signs designed to convey emergency and hazard information effectively.
- Registered safety signs: The amendment adds new official safety signs registered under ISO 7010, ensuring their consistency and reliability in international safety communications.
- New safety signs introduced include:
- E067: Evacuation mattress - Indicates the location of an evacuation mattress to assist in emergency rescue operations.
- E068: Lifebuoy with light and smoke - Marks the location of a lifebuoy equipped with signaling devices such as light and smoke for marine safety.
- E069: Person overboard call point - Highlights the emergency call point to report a person overboard, critical for maritime safety responses.
- F019: Unconnected fire hose - Signifies the location of an unconnected fire hose prepared for emergency fire-fighting actions.
- Usage guidelines: Each new sign includes detailed symbolic imagery, its intended function, and guidance on supplementary text or training to enhance understanding where necessary.
- Compliance and implementation: CEN members across multiple European countries are mandated to incorporate this amendment into national standards by October 2022, ensuring widespread harmonization.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 7010:2020/A3:2022 plays a vital role in various sectors where safety communication is paramount:
- Occupational health and safety: Ensures workers can quickly identify emergency equipment and hazard warnings to reduce workplace injuries.
- Maritime and rescue operations: Specialized signs such as lifebuoy with light and smoke and person overboard call points improve emergency response times on ships and offshore facilities.
- Public safety environments: Enables clear identification of fire safety equipment like fire hoses and evacuation aids in public buildings, enhancing emergency evacuation efficiency.
- Manufacturing and industrial sites: Standardized signs help manage accident prevention and disaster control by providing clear visual warnings aligned with international safety protocols.
- Training and compliance: Organizations utilize these symbols in manuals, safety instructions, and training programs to maximize hazard awareness and compliance with legal safety requirements.
Related Standards
- ISO 3864-4: Provides the colorimetric and photometric properties for safety colours referenced in ISO 7010, aiding in accurate colour reproduction for safety signs.
- ISO 9186-1: Details testing methods for the comprehensibility of graphical symbols, informing the design and validation of safety signs as referenced in the amendment.
- ISO/IEC Directives Part 1 and Part 2: Outline procedural rules for ISO standard development and editorial practices applicable during the amendment process.
- EN ISO 7010:2020: The base standard for graphical symbols and safety signs, which this amendment updates with new registered safety signs.
