Overview

EN ISO 9969:2016 - Thermoplastics pipes: Determination of ring stiffness (ISO 9969:2016) specifies a laboratory test method for determining the ring stiffness of circular-section thermoplastic pipes. Adopted by CEN as a European Standard, this third edition supersedes EN ISO 9969:2007 and defines the apparatus, test pieces, conditioning, test procedure and calculation required to report ring stiffness values for quality control, type testing and specification compliance.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and principle: Ring stiffness is determined by compressing a pipe sample between two parallel plates at a constant deflection speed and recording force vs. deflection. The stiffness is calculated from the force required to produce a 3 % diametric deflection.
  • Apparatus: A compressive testing machine with parallel rigid plates, capable of controlled crosshead speed and sufficient force/travel. Force measuring accuracy: ±2 %.
  • Deflection speeds (selected values from the standard):
    • di ≤ 100 mm: 2 ± 0.1 mm/min
    • 100 < di ≤ 200 mm: 5 ± 0.25 mm/min
    • 200 < di ≤ 400 mm: 10 ± 0.5 mm/min
    • 400 < di ≤ 710 mm: 20 ± 1 mm/min
    • di > 710 mm: 0.03 × di ± 5 %
  • Test pieces: Three samples (a, b, c) cut from a marked pipe; lengths typically 300 ± 10 mm for pipes ≤ 1500 mm nominal diameter (special rules for structured or very large pipes). Inside diameter measured per ISO 3126; measurement accuracies: length ±1 mm, inside diameter ±0.5 %, deflection change 0.1 mm or 1 % of deflection.
  • Conditioning and temperature: Samples conditioned at test temperature for at least 24 h. Default laboratory temperature: (23 ± 2) °C (27 °C allowed regionally). For type testing or disputes, sample age should be (21 ± 2) days.
  • Test report: Requires recorded dimensions, test conditions, force–deflection data and calculated ring stiffness (kN/m).

Applications and users

  • Manufacturers of thermoplastic pipes and fittings for hydraulic, drainage and buried applications use EN ISO 9969:2016 for product development, quality control and specification certification.
  • Independent testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies apply the method for type approval and compliance testing.
  • Engineers, specifiers and procurement teams reference ring stiffness values when selecting pipes for load-bearing conditions (e.g., buried pipelines, traffic loading).
  • Standards committees and regulatory authorities rely on the method to harmonize mechanical property requirements.

Related standards

  • ISO 3126 - referenced for dimensional measurements (inside diameter, circumference).
  • EN adoption status: EN ISO 9969:2016 (supersedes EN ISO 9969:2007); ICS code 23.040.20 (Plastics pipes).
