(Main)Plastics - Determination of the tendency of compounds and products based on vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers to evolve hydrogen chloride and any other acidic products at elevated temperatures - Part 2: pH method (ISO 182-2:1990)
- Abstract
May be used as a quality-control test during manufacture and conversion of PVC compounds and for coloured compounds. Is not recommended for compounds in the form of dry blends. Defines the stability time. The principle consists in exposing a sample of the material at an agreed temperature in a gas stream, followed by absorption of the hydrogen chloride evolved in a 0.1 mol/l solution of sodium chloride. The amount of hydrogen chloride evolved is measured by recording the change in pH of the sodium chloride solution. Figures show the general arrangement of apparatus and details of the dehydrochlorination cell. Together with three other parts of ISO 182, cancels and replaces ISO Recommendation R 182:1970.

SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000 is the SIST adoption of ISO 182-2 for plastics based on vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers. It specifies the pH method for measuring the tendency of PVC compounds and products to evolve hydrogen chloride and other acidic products at elevated temperatures. The method is used to compare thermal stability, heat-stabilizer performance, and the behavior of compounded and coloured PVC materials.
What does SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000 specify?
SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000 specifies a thermal stability test for PVC compounds and products, using the change in pH of a sodium chloride absorbing solution to measure evolved hydrogen chloride. It is organized into clauses for scope, references, definition, principle, reagents, apparatus, sample preparation, procedure, result expression, precision, and the test report.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Cleaning the apparatus |
The scope covers quality-control use during manufacture and conversion, and characterization of PVC compounds and products. The method is suitable for coloured compounds and products where a heat-discolouration check may be less useful. It is recommended for compounded materials and products, and the standard notes that dry blends are not a good fit because they may be too non-homogeneous.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000?
Principle and measurement
- Clause 4 measures hydrogen chloride by passing nitrogen over a heated test portion and absorbing the evolved gas in 0.1 mol/l sodium chloride solution. The pH change is then recorded. In practice, this means the result depends on both the sample and tight control of the gas and liquid handling.
- Clause 1.3 warns that other decomposition products can also affect pH. For dissimilar compounds and products, results need careful comparison, and ISO 182-4 is named for chloride-ion determination when pH alone is not enough.
Sample preparation and test conditions
- Clause 7 gives different preparation routes for plastisols, pellets, extrudates, mouldings, thick sheet, film, coatings, and cable insulation or sheathing. This matters because sample form affects surface area and therefore the measured stability time.
- Clause 9 gives preferred test temperatures of 200 °C for unplasticized compounds and products, 200 °C for cable insulation and sheathing, and 180 °C for plasticized compounds and products. Users need to agree the test temperature with the material type.
Apparatus and reagents
- Clause 5 requires analytical-grade reagents and a nitrogen supply of suitable purity and dryness. The nitrogen is checked by its ability not to shift the pH of the absorbing solution during a blank exposure.
- Clause 6 defines the apparatus, including dehydrochlorination cells A and B, the oil bath, the pH-meter, the stirring arrangement, and the gas flowmeter. The bath must hold temperature within 0.1 °C, the gas flow is 120 cm3/min ± 4 cm3/min, and the pH-meter must read to at least 0.01 pH units. In practice, the setup must be stable enough that equipment variation does not dominate the result.
Test execution, result, and report
- Clause 8 requires at least two determinations on each sample.
- Clause 10 starts with purging the system with nitrogen, then immersing the dehydrochlorination cell and tracking the pH until it reaches 3.8.
- Clause 11 defines stability time, t_s, as the time to reach that pH value. Clause 13 requires reporting the material, test temperature, cell type, individual results, mean value, deviations, and test date.
What terms does SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000 define?
- PVC - vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers covered by the method.
- stability time, t_s - the time needed for the absorbing solution to reach the specified pH change under the test conditions.
- dehydrochlorination - the evolution of hydrogen chloride from the heated material.
- absorbing solution - the 0.1 mol/l sodium chloride solution that captures evolved hydrogen chloride.
- test portion - the prepared sample placed in the dehydrochlorination cell.
- pH meter - the instrument used to follow the change in the absorbing solution during the test.
Who uses SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000?
SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000 is used by laboratories and production teams working with PVC compounds and products. It is relevant for quality control during manufacture and conversion, for checking the effectiveness of heat-stabilizing systems, and for characterizing coloured compounds and products. It is also used when a material supplier or buyer needs a laboratory method to compare thermal stability under agreed conditions.
What changed in SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000 from the previous edition?
SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000, together with the other three parts of ISO 182, cancels and replaces ISO Recommendation R 182:1970. The foreword describes the four parts of ISO 182 as a technical revision of that recommendation.
Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000?
- ISO 565 - provides the test sieve openings used when preparing particulate test material.
- ISO 3696 - specifies the water quality used for the sodium chloride solution.
- ISO 4793 - specifies the porous sintered-glass filter used in the reusable cell arrangement.
- ISO 6353-2 - provides the analytical-grade reagent specification used for the test chemicals.
- ISO 182-4 - is named for chloride-ion determination when pH results may be affected by other decomposition products.
What does the SIST EN ISO 182-2:2000 document contain?
The standard gives the full test sequence from sample preparation through result reporting. It includes the general apparatus layout and detailed drawings of the dehydrochlorination cells, tubes, and measurement cell in Figures 1 to 6. It also includes precision data in Tables 1 to 3, which support repeatability and reproducibility checks. Annex A gives cleaning procedures for the reusable cell, sintered-glass discs, connecting tube, and measurement cell, which is important for avoiding residue from one test affecting the next.

ISO 182=2:1990(E) Foreword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern- mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an Inter- national Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. International Standard ISO 182-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plast&. Together with the three other Parts of ISO 182, it cancels and replaces ISO Recommendation R 1823970, of which the four Parts of ISO 182 constitute a technical revision. ISO 182 consists of the following Parts, under the general title Plastics - Determination of the tendency of compounds and products based on Vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers to evolve hydrogen chlor- ide and any other acidic products at elevated temperatures: - Part I: Congo red methods - Part 2: pH method - Part 3: Conductometric method - Part 4: Potentiometric method Annex A of this part of ISO 182 is for information only. 0 ISO 1990 All rights reserved. _- INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ISO 182=2:1990(E) Plastics - Determination of the tendency of compounds and products based on Vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers to evolve hydrogen chloride and any other acidic products at elevated temperatures - Part 2: pH method WARNING - The use of this part of ISO 182 may invoive hazardous materiais, operations and equipment. This part of ISO 182 does not purport to address all of the safety Problems associated with its use. it is the responsibiiity of the user of this part of ISO 182 to establish appropriate safety and heaith practices and determine the appiicabiiity of reguiatory iimitations Prior to use. 1 Scope 1.1 This part of ISO 182 specifies a method for the determination of the thermal stability at elevated temperatures of compounds and products based on Vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers (in the following text abbreviated to PVC) which undergo dehydrochlorination (the evolution of hydrogen chloride). 1.2 The method may be used as a quality-control test during manufacture and conversion of PVC compounds. lt may be used also for the character- ization of PVC compounds and products, especially with regard to the effectiveness of their heat- stabilizing Systems. lt is suitable for coloured compounds and products where a discolouration test under the action of heat may be unsatisfactory. 1.3 The method is recommended for compounded materials and products only, although the method tan be used for polymers in powder form under ap- propriate conditions to be agreed upon between the interested Parties. lt is not recommended for com- pounds in the form of dry blends since such ma- terials may not be sufficiently homogeneous. PVC compounds and products may evolve decom- Position products in addition to hydrogen chloride at elevated temperatures. A limited number of these decomposition products may affect the pH of an ab- sorbing solution. It is not possible to compensate for this effect within the scope of this part of ISO 182, and therefore care is necessary in comparing re- sults for dissimilar compounds and products. In this case, a method suitable for the determination of the chloride ions in the absorbing Solution shall be used (see ISO 182-4). 1.4 The method may also be applied to other plastics materials which tan evolve hydrogen chlor- ide or other hydrogen halides when heated under the conditions prescribed by the relevant specifi- cations, or when agreed upon between the inter- ested Parties. 2 Normative references The following Standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of ISO 182.
