CEN/TC 160/WG 2 - Personal fall arresting systems, components and systems

This document specifies requirements, test methods, marking, manufacturer’s instructions and information for retractable type fall arresters (RTFAs) and applies to a RTFA with a single retractable lanyard and a RTFA with two retractable lanyards (twin RTFA) as components of one of the fall arrest systems covered by EN 363:2018.
This European standard is not applicable to RTFAs and twin RTFAs used in any sport or recreational activity.

This European Standard specifies the requirements, test methods, marking, information supplied by the manufacturer and packaging for guided type fall arresters including a rigid anchor line. This anchor line is usually attached to or integrated in ladders or rungs adequately fixed to suitable structures. Guided type fall arresters including a rigid anchor line conforming to this European Standard are components of one of the fall arrest systems covered by EN 363.
This European Standard applies to rigid anchor lines which are intended to be installed vertically and/or with a combination of forward-leaning angle and/or sideways leaning angle between the true vertical and the vertical +15° (see Figure 2).
Multi-user applications, i.e. rigid anchor lines that allow more than one user to be attached at any one time, are not addressed in this document.

Energy absorbers conforming to this European Standard are used as elements or components either integrated in a lanyard, an anchor line or a full body harness or in combination with one of them.
Combinations of an energy absorber and a lanyard are sub-systems constituting one of the fall arrest systems covered by prEN 363, when combined with a full body harness specified in EN 361.
Fall arresters are specified in EN 353-1, EN 353-2 and EN 360.

This document specifies requirements, test methods, marking, manufacturer’s instructions and information and packaging for guided type fall arresters including a flexible anchor line forming a single product. This anchor line is attached to an upper anchor point for vertical and inclined applications; for horizontal applications, the anchor point can be located at the user’s foot level. Guided type fall arresters including a flexible anchor line conforming to this document are components of one of the fall arrest systems covered by EN 363:2018. Other types of fall arresters are specified in EN 353 1:2014+A1:2017 or EN 360:2023.

This European Standard specifies the terminology and the general requirements for fall arrest systems which serve as personal protective equipment against falls from a height. This European Standard additionally describes examples of how components or assemblies of components may be connected into a fall arrest system. These examples should enable the purchaser or user to assemble all components in a correct manner and to build up a fall arrest system.

This standard specifies the specific requirements, test methods, instructions for use and marking for connectors. Connectors according to this standard are used in work positioning and fall arrest systems specified in EN 358 and EN 363 respectively. Lanyards with connectors as terminations are specified in EN 354.

This standard specifies the requirements, test methods, instructions for use, marking and packaging for energy absorbers. Energy absorbers according to this standard are used in fall arrest systems specified in EN 363. Fall arresters are specified in EN 353-1, EN 353-2 and EN 360.

This standard specifies the requirements, test methods, instructions for use marking and packaging for fixed adjustable lanyards. Lanyards according to this standard are used in fall arrest systems specified in EN 363. Other types of lanyards are specified in EN 358.

This standard specifies the requirements, test methods, instructions for use and marking for retractable type fall arresters. Retractable type fall arresters according to this standard are used in fall arrest systems specified in EN 363 in conjunction with full body harnesses specified in EN 361. Other types of fall arresters are specified in EN 353-1 and EN 353-2, and energy absorbers are specified in EN 355.

This standard specifies the terminology and the general requirements for fall arrest systems which serve as personal protective equipment against falls from a height.
