ISO/TC 38/SC 20 - Fabric descriptions

ISO 23606:2009 specifies various systems of symbolic notation and pattern design for knitted fabrics. The symbolic notations contained in ISO 23606:2009 do not necessarily constitute the only method of representation.

ISO 8499:2003 describes defects which commonly appear during the inspection of knitted fabrics.A defect is a fault that would reduce the expected performance of the knitted fabric or, if it appeared in a prominent position in an article made from the fabric, would readily be seen and rejected by a prospective purchaser. Except where otherwise stated the descriptions apply to defects appearing in both weft-knitted and warp-knitted fabrics.

This International Standard defines terms for basic knitting concepts. The definitions of this vocabulary are complete in themselves; illustrations are used to clarify the content of a definition, but no standardization of any notational system is attempted.

The purpose is to define woven-fabric defects, i.e. those characteristics that have been unintentionally introduced into the fabric. The presence of one or other of these characteristics in a fabric does not automatically imply that the fabric is sub-standard. Divided in general defects, yarn defects in a woven fabric, defects in the weft direction, defects in the warp direction, defects due to, or apparent after, dyeing, printing or finishing, defects of, or associated with, the selvedges.

Establishes a code, consisting of four elements, for the systematic numerical notation for basic weaves and their simple derivatives. For definitions refers to ISO 3572.

Definitions of general terms for describing weaves (for example, warp, weft (filling), pick, face, back, interlacing, weave, float, design paper, etc.) are given and the three basic weaves are described.

A number of characteristic parameters for woven fabrics and their constituents at various stages of manufacture and processing for the purpose of fabric designation are given. It is not intended that the list of parameters should be exclusive and additional information can be given as required. Applicable to all woven fabrics except textile floor coverings.
