Standard Practice for the Evaluation of Machine Washable T-Shirts

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This practice may be used to evaluate pertinent characteristics of washable T-shirts.  
4.2 T-shirts may be subject to extra processes such as garment dyeing, garment washing, printing, application of embroidery or trims. An individual process or combination or processes may affect the performance of the final product.  
4.3 This practice may be used by mutual agreement between the purchaser and the supplier to establish purchasing specifications.
SCOPE
1.1 This practice covers test methods and procedures used to evaluate important characteristics of machine washable T-shirts. T-shirts may be made of knitted fabric composed of any textile fiber(s) or blend of fibers and intended to be used as underwear or as an outer garment.  
1.2 T-shirts' characteristics may be assessed either as a final product or at any intermediate processing stage.  
1.3 This practice excludes T-shirts intended for hand washing or dry cleaning care.  
1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.  
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. ABSTRACT
This specification covers the evaluation of specific performance characteristics of importance in seamless knit garments, including camisoles, panties, slips, girdles and swimwear. 4.2.1 In such cases, any references to the specifications should specify that: “This product meets ASTM specifications XXXX except for the following characteristic(s).”  
4.3 Where no pre-purchase agreement has been reached between the purchaser and supplier, and in case of controversy, the requirements listed in Table 1 are intended to be used as a guide only. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Upon mutual agreement between the purchaser and the seller, woven fabrics intended for this end use should meet all of the requirements listed in Table 1 of this specification. (A) More than one method can be used to measure these properties. These methods cannot be used interchangeably since there can be no overall correlation between them (see Note 2, Note 3, and Note 7).(B) AATCC Gray Scale for Color Change.(C) AATCC Gray Scale for Staining.(D) AATCC 9-Step Chromatic Transference Scale.(E) It has been reported that the results for staining, obtained by standard AATCC Test Methods, on fabrics dyed to dark shades that contain a combination of polyester and spandex, or their blends, may not show the full staining propensity of such fabrics in consumer use. It is, therefore, recommended that the staining results obtained by these tests not be used for acceptance testing of such fabrics.  
4.2 It is recognized that for purposes of fashion or aesthetics the ultimate consumer of articles made from these fabrics may find acceptable fabrics that do not conform to all of the requirements in Table 1. Therefore, one or more of the requirements listed in Table 1 may be modified by mutual agreement between the purchaser and the seller.  
4.2.1 In such cases, any references to the specification shall specify that: This fabric meets ASTM Specification D3655 except for the following characteristic(s).  
4.3 Where no prepurchase agreement has been reached between the purchaser and the seller, and in case of controversy, the requirements listed in Table 1 are intended to be used as a guide only. ABSTRACT
This performance specification covers fabrics for woven blouses, dresses, dress shirts, and sport shirts. It is not however applicable to woven fabrics used for interlinings. These requirements apply to the length and width directions for those properties where fabric direction is pertinent. The fabrics shall meet the following performance requirements: breaking strength which shall be determined using a constant rate of extension tensile testing machine; resistance to yarn slippage; tearing strength; dimensional change during pressing and finishing, after laundering, or after dry cleaning; colorfastness to laundering and dry cleaning; shade change due to sodium hypochlorite bleaching or non-chlorine bleaching, burnt gas fumes, dry and wet crocking, perspiration, and xenon-arc light; fabric smoothness after pressing, laundering, and dry cleaning; and flammability.
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Fabrics intended for this end-use should meet all of the requirements listed in Table 1.  (A) There is more than one method that can be used to measure breaking strength, tearing strength and colorfastness.
