Overview

ASTM F825-22: Standard Specification for Drawers, Furniture, Marine, Steel establishes requirements for the construction and performance of steel drawers used in marine furniture. This standard ensures durability, operational safety, and suitability for demanding maritime environments. It specifically addresses joining methods, hardware, finishes, and rigorous test criteria suited for steel furniture drawers on ships and marine facilities.

The specification applies when referenced by other marine furniture standards and covers all furniture drawers except for those requiring progressive drawer mechanisms. ASTM F825-22 follows internationally recognized principles for standardization, supporting consistency and quality across global marine applications.

Key Topics

  • Material and Manufacturing

    • Specifies the use of steel, including stainless and galvanized options per referenced standards
    • Metal components joined by welding or structural adhesives for robust construction
    • Minimum material thickness requirements to ensure strength and stability
  • Performance and Safety Features

    • Drawers must incorporate positive latching systems to prevent accidental opening in heavy seas
    • Drawer and case tracks require zinc coating and must include antifriction devices for smooth operation
    • Load and tilt tests assure that drawers support expected weights and remain closed during vessel motion
  • Design and Functionality

    • Drawers equipped with handles or pulls for operational ease
    • Lock options available upon request
    • Stop features prevent full drawer removal and help limit travel when fully extended
  • Workmanship and Finish

    • All exposed surfaces to be finished to prevent corrosion, usually with a baked enamel coating
    • Edges and burrs must be removed for personnel safety
    • Paint color to match supporting furniture as specified in ordering documents
  • Inspection and Packaging

    • Drawers to be installed in the respective furniture prior to shipment
    • Packaging and marking requirements are governed by those of the complete furniture item

Applications

ASTM F825-22 is vital for manufacturers, shipbuilders, and suppliers involved with marine accommodation outfitting. Typical applications include:

  • Naval and commercial vessels - Used in shipboard furniture such as desks, lockers, and storage solutions exposed to heavy-duty use and rough conditions
  • Offshore platforms - Ideal for storage units in demanding offshore environments requiring secure and reliable drawer operation
  • Maritime accommodation modules - Ensures uniform quality and safety in steel furniture drawers across diverse marine interiors

Adhering to this standard helps marine furniture manufacturers and shipowners achieve regulatory compliance and long-term reliability in steel drawers, reducing maintenance and enhancing safety at sea.

Related Standards

ASTM F825-22 references several other standards to ensure compatibility and quality, including:

  • ASTM A240/A240M – Specification for Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip
  • ASTM A653/A653M – Specification for Zinc-Coated or Zinc-Iron Alloy-Coated Steel Sheet
  • ASTM D907 – Adhesives Terminology
  • AISC Manual – Wire and Sheet Metal Gauges Equivalent Thickness Tables

For broader compliance and integration, this standard should be considered alongside other ASTM standards covering marine furniture and outfitting components.
