Overview

ASTM F822-22: Standard Specification for Chest of Drawers (Chiffonier), Steel, Marine outlines the essential requirements for the design, materials, construction, and performance of steel marine chests of drawers. These units, also known as chiffoniers, are specifically intended for use in staterooms and other spaces aboard marine vessels. The standard ensures that marine furniture delivers reliable performance, safety, durability, and quality suitable for its demanding environment.

Key Topics

  • Design & Construction
Defines the requirements for steel construction, including minimum thicknesses and joining methods, to ensure strength, stability, and longevity in marine settings.

  • Dimensions & Tolerances
Specifies key dimensions and allowable tolerances for all major components to ensure compatibility and fit within standard marine stateroom layouts.

  • Materials & Finishes
Details the specifications for sheet metal, painting, finishing, and coatings to protect against corrosion and wear in marine environments.

  • Performance & Quality Assurance
Covers performance testing, sound-deadening materials, security features, and inspections to verify each chest of drawers meets functional and quality expectations.

  • Customization & Options
Allows purchasers to specify preferences for color, drawer lock configurations, top materials, and additional security features.

Applications

The ASTM F822-22 standard is essential for anyone involved in the design, manufacturing, or procurement of marine furniture, specifically chest of drawers (chiffoniers), for ships and offshore platforms. Its practical value includes:

  • Maritime Vessel Accommodation
Ensures safe, secure, and functional storage in ship staterooms, enhancing crew comfort and safety.

  • Offshore Facilities
Provides robust storage solutions for modular accommodation units in offshore oil and gas installations and maritime service vessels.

  • Marine Interiors Contracting
Supports naval architects, shipbuilders, and marine outfitting companies in delivering compliant, high-quality interiors that meet international standards.

  • Procurement and Specification
Enables shipowners, operators, and purchasing departments to specify exact requirements, ensuring consistent quality and simplifying purchasing decisions for marine furnishings.

Related Standards

For comprehensive marine furniture compliance, refer to the following ASTM and industry standards:

  • ASTM F825 - Specification for Drawers, Furniture, Marine, Steel
Addresses the construction and security features for drawers used in marine environments.

  • ASTM F826 - Specification for Tops, Furniture, Marine, Steel
Covers design and materials for furniture tops, providing guidance on compatible top options for chests of drawers.

  • AISC Wire and Sheet Metal Gauges
Reference for standard gauge sizes used in steel fabrication.

  • ASTM D907 - Terminology of Adhesives
Defines adhesive types and terms used in the joining of marine furniture components.

By adhering to ASTM F822-22 and its related standards, stakeholders can ensure that marine chests of drawers deliver lasting performance, safety, and comfort in demanding marine environments. This standard is a key resource for advancing the quality, consistency, and international competitiveness of marine outfitting solutions.
