Overview
EN 13403:2003 - "Ventilation for buildings - Non‑metallic ducts - Ductwork made from insulation ductboards" (CEN) defines basic requirements and performance characteristics for ductwork fabricated from insulation ductboards used in building ventilation and air‑conditioning systems for human occupancy. The standard covers material, mechanical, airtightness, cleaning and durability requirements but does not itself assign reaction‑to‑fire classifications for ductboard types.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material scope: ductboards made from mineral wool (MW), polyurethane/polyisocyanurate (PUR/PIR) and phenolic foam (PF) with facings that provide a vapour barrier.
- Particle erosion and emission: limits on particle release after cleaning/airflow testing - e.g., emission < 60 mg/m3 for particles > 0.5 mm and ≤ 4 mg/m3 for particles > 5.0 mm.
- Pressure resistance: ducts and connectors must withstand 2.5 × manufacturer’s rated positive pressure (minimum 200 Pa) without rupture (openings > 4 mm considered rupture).
- Air leakage / airtightness classes: class A, B, C defined by an air leakage factor fmax (values referenced to prEN 1507) and tabulated maximum leakage rates at specified test pressures.
- Dimensional & mechanical properties:
- Board stiffness classified by flexural rigidity (EI) into R1–R5 classes (numerical thresholds provided in the standard).
- Length/width/tolerance limits and thickness tolerances under load, plus optional dimensional stability requirements at elevated T and RH.
- Cleaning and durability: ductboards must resist 20 cleaning simulations (equivalent to 20 years: one cleaning/year) with no delamination, erosion or excessive particle emission; brushes must be non‑metallic.
- Water vapour resistance: outer facing minimum Zv ≥ 140 m2·h·Pa/mg to avoid internal condensation.
- Application restrictions: not suitable (without additional protection) for conveying solid particles, corrosive gases, outdoor/BURIED use, kitchen/lab smoke extraction, or above specified temperature/humidity limits (e.g., MW: max internal air temp 90 °C / external 60 °C; PUR/PIR/PF: max internal 65 °C).
- Fire: the standard requires reaction‑to‑fire classification to be determined per EN 13501‑1 or national fire regulations; it does not itself assign Euroclasses.
Applications and who uses it
EN 13403 is aimed at professionals involved in HVAC ductwork design, manufacture and maintenance:
- HVAC designers & building services engineers - specifying appropriate ductboard types, stiffness and airtightness for ventilation systems.
- Duct manufacturers - ensuring production tolerances, facings, water vapour resistance and testing regimes meet the standard.
- Installers & contractors - following assembly, support and cleaning-method guidance to meet leakage and durability requirements.
- Facility managers & maintenance teams - choosing compatible cleaning methods and lifecycle expectations.
- Regulatory authorities and specifiers - referencing clear performance and testing criteria for compliance checks.
