General Information
Overview
EN ISO 8989:1998 (ISO 8989:1995) specifies a laboratory method to determine the water miscibility (water tolerance) of liquid phenolic resins. The test quantifies the percentage by mass of water required to produce a persistent turbidity in the resin under controlled conditions. This second edition replaces the first (1988) and revises the procedure to use grade 3 water (ISO 3696) instead of distilled water.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applicability to liquid phenolic (thermosetting) resins; miscibility depends on resin chemistry and degree of condensation.
- Test temperature: Performed at 23 °C ± 0.1 °C; both resin and water must be conditioned to this temperature prior to testing.
- Reagent: Grade 3 water as defined in ISO 3696.
- Apparatus: Typical laboratory equipment required includes a 100 ml (or larger) beaker, short solid-stem thermometer (19–31 °C, 0.1 °C divisions), magnetic stirrer, 50 ml burette (0.1 ml divisions, class A), and an analytical balance (0.01 g accuracy).
- Sample mass: Test portions typically 10 g to 50 g; use a larger container if expected miscibility exceeds 900%.
- Procedure highlights:
- Perform a preliminary test to estimate miscibility if unknown.
- Add water in stages: initial addition ~50% of expected amount, subsequent ~10% steps until turbidity appears/vanishes on stirring, then add dropwise until turbidity persists for at least 30 seconds after agitation.
- Record the volume V (ml) of water added.
- Result expression: Water miscibility WM (%) = (V / m) × 100, where V is water volume (ml) and m is mass of resin test portion (g). Optionally results can be expressed as ratio 1:x where x = WM/100.
- Reporting: Include reference to the standard, resin identification, test conditions and date, and calculated result.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Resin manufacturers, quality control laboratories, R&D teams, and suppliers of thermosetting materials working with liquid phenolic resins.
- Practical uses:
- Quality control to ensure consistent water tolerance for processing (mixing, storage, handling).
- Formulation development and R&D to compare degrees of condensation and additive effects on water miscibility.
- Supplier and customer specifications where water compatibility affects processing performance or end-use properties.
- Keywords: EN ISO 8989:1998, ISO 8989:1995, liquid phenolic resins, water miscibility, water tolerance test, phenolic resin water compatibility, grade 3 water (ISO 3696).

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 8989 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee SC 12, Thermosetting materials.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (IS0 8989:1988)
which has been revised so that the test is carried out with grade 3 water
as defined in IS0 3696 rather than distilled water.
