Plastics - Liquid epoxy resins - Determination of tendency to crystallize (ISO 4895:2014)

ISO 4895:2014 specifies a method for determining the tendency of liquid epoxy resins to crystallize. The tendency to crystallize is determined by observing, at specified time intervals, changes in fluidity and the onset of crystallization.

Polimerni materiali - Tekoče epoksidne smole - Ugotavljanje nagnjenosti h kristalizaciji (ISO 4895:2014)

Ta mednarodni standard določa postopek ugotavljanja nagnjenosti tekočih epoksidnih smol h kristalizaciji. Nagnjenost h kristalizaciji se določi z opazovanjem sprememb v fluidnosti in opazovanjem nastanka kristalizacije v določenih časovnih intervalih.

Overview

EN ISO 4895:2014 - Plastics: Liquid epoxy resins - Determination of tendency to crystallize specifies a laboratory method to assess the tendency of liquid epoxy resins to crystallize. The test quantifies how long a resin takes to show reduced fluidity and the onset of crystallization by periodic observation under controlled conditions. Results are reported as the number of days to reach defined stages of solidification.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Determines crystallization tendency by observing changes in fluidity and appearance at specified intervals.
  • Principle: Mix resin with calcium carbonate and ethanol, condition at low temperature, and monitor fluid movement and solidification.
  • Reagents:
    • Calcium carbonate (per ISO 6353-3:1987, R 53)
    • Ethanol (per ISO 6353-2:1983, R 11)
  • Apparatus: Refrigerator or cold enclosure at (10 ± 2) °C, test tube (100 ml, 40 mm × 80 mm) with stopper, hard glass rod (10 mm diameter), oven, analytical balance (0.01 g), and constant temperature room (23 ± 5) °C.
  • Procedure (summary):
    • Weigh 20 g liquid epoxy resin into test tube.
    • Dry in oven at (60 ± 2) °C for 16 h.
    • Cool to (23 ± 5) °C, add 20 g CaCO3 and 2 g ethanol, mix 2 min.
    • Store vertically at (10 ± 2) °C.
    • Observe twice daily (example schedule: start 09:00; first observation 17:00; then 09:00 next day, etc.). For each observation warm to 23 ±5 °C, place tube horizontally 1 min and record:
      • a: liquid tip movement L ≥ 10 mm
      • b: L < 10 mm
      • c: completely solidified (crystallized)
    • If not crystallized, remix and return to cold storage.
  • Expression of results: Number of days elapsed to reach stages a, b, and c.
  • Precision: No fixed precision value (tendency-based). Interlaboratory trials in Japan indicated improved reliability and environmental acceptability over previous editions.
  • Safety: Follow normal laboratory practices.

Applications

  • Quality control and acceptance testing of liquid epoxy resins.
  • Shelf-life and storage stability assessment for formulation selection.
  • Supplier qualification and incoming material inspection.
  • R&D when evaluating effects of formulation, purity, additives or water content on crystallization tendency.
  • Logistics and handling decisions to prevent unwanted crystallization during transport or storage.

Who should use this standard

  • Epoxy resin manufacturers and formulators
  • QC/analytical laboratories in plastics and composites industry
  • R&D teams developing thermosetting materials
  • Procurement and materials engineers responsible for supplier acceptance
